Hey everybody, Thanks for having such a cool forum. I did my homework on here and a few other manufacturers web sites and settled into a V-160 T for my 2 68' Mustangs and the newly acquired 49' Chevy Coupe. So far I have the welder on the way and I need to outfit it. I see Lincoln has an all in one outfit for it but I also read some old threads that were talking about a better way to outfit the new rig. I have only used a foot controll before but I was thinking it might be easier to use the hand controll rig for body panels and other on car fab work. Does anyone have some direction for outfitting for tig and stick along with the best places to get the goodies? Thanks,CouperLast edited by 68Couper; 12-27-2008 at 02:05 AM.Reason: content
Reply:What follows is only my opinion. As far as choosing between a foot pedal and a hand control, I would choose the foot pedal.I spent the first 5 years of my career building IMSA and SCCA Pro GT/Touring cars and have logged alot of time working the pedal with my knee, elbow, butt etc.....I always like the pedal more.I cannot really work the hand control well enough. I wanna say that is 99% operator error though. Where to get the stuff? You will find the cheapest prices online, although going down to your local welding supply place, preferably one that is indeed local (not a national chain like Airgas or Praxair) and developing a relationship with those guys really pays off.You may pay a little more than at the big chains but the customer service is usually better. And they will be there to help you out in a pinch.Just my experience.
Reply:i am a tig newb. can lay a decent bead in a straight line, cant go around a corner or a piece ofpipe to save my ***. have had the feeling that its time to get off the chair and learn to move around round things(have the same feeling about stick too) and it seems like the foot pedal is an anchor. if i stand up, i cant use it becaause now my weight is on my feet ...seems like there are positions where a hand control would be better...

Reply:Hey gents, Thanks for the replys. I live kind of out in the country so the air gas hookup is out of sight. I'll be getting my tanks at the local weldshop. I already have a good rap with him from getting mig and cutting tanks for the job.... I know it sounds kind of funny but I am super green to the tig electrode, gas, accy thing. I did tig some c/m on the road race bike that I ran in Daytona a few [lot] of years back. The other mechanic at the bike shop just set up the machine and sharpened the electrode and said "here you go." He had gone to school for welding and I went for HD and Jap....The welds all looked good and it held up for the whole season. The bike did 160 and was way more stable all the way around. Turn one at Brainard is WOT. I also had machined solid motor mounts to make the engine a stressed member also.I would REALLY like some intelligent coaching on this one. I'm going to have allot of seat time with this welder. Easpecially with the old mustangs....What do you get and where do you go online to get it? Thanks,Couper |
