I was looking at a thread over in the 'alignment' forum and it showed a pretty cleverclamp for holding things square while welding, but one open question (for me) iswhat would you use to prevent clamp faces from marring the steel?  It would haveto be high-temperature resistant and reasonably soft--fiberglass cloth?  I can'tthink of anything else.  (Maybe some old welding gloves?)
Reply:Cut up old tractor or truck tubes might work if the clamp would hold strong enough with the rubber in there.  Probably something better out there thoughClamps usually come off after tacking (at least mine do), so I don't know if heat resistance would be too much of an issue.  I suppose if you left it on for the finish welds heat would become an issue, but I don't know if you'd want to leave 'em on."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I don't know how hot you're going to get it but I use old welding gloves like Sam said.
Reply:I use squares of alloy sheet on stainless seems to work well
Reply:I use the old glove myself and sometimes I will break or cut paint mixing sticks and use them in the jaws of my clamps. The paint sticks work really well on stainless.I am what I am, Deal with it!If necessity is the Mother of Invention, I must be the Father of Desperation!
Reply:I use a piece of fire blanket when I have to clamp down on hard on soft material. Anything like rubber used (unless  high temp silcone) would likely burn on a high transfer heat material such as aluminum.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
