ad on craigslist for portable welder. The ad just says Hobart 250, runs at 1800 rpm, looks pretty old in the picture, anybody know what this is? It is silver colored, they want 800 bucks. Also there is a miller aed225 that looks really good in the pics, kept inside blue paint is still sharp. for 600 bucks. I'm looking for a good all around portable. Thanks, Jim
Reply:No offense to Hobart but I would go with the Miller. In addition if the welder is old you need to not only be sure it runs but that you can also get parts and service.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.& 2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:Thanks for the advice, I have a aed225 miller. My dad gave it to me, the engine is blown. It's an Onan, my dad checked into a rebuild kit. The kit was around 1500 bucks, and he paid 1000 for the welder. Anybody know of another engine you can put on a miller aed 225?
Reply:Don't be so fast to give up on the hobart, if the engine is a wisconsin the parts are mostly available and cheap. The electrical end is a different story but most of the older ones are pretty reliable for a long time and relatively simple.
