does anyone know if they make precut pipe nipples with bevels already on them for practicing pipe welding, and where to get them? I dont have access to a pipe beveler, and I dont feel confident enough to bevel my own by hand. Any help?
Reply:What sizes? What types of pipe metal? if your just looking for normal everyday use pipe try Lowe's HoMe Depot, or Local hardware, maybe even tractor supply.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:you can purchase them from the Hobart welding school, but it's probably cheaper to call a local machine shop.  They can buy the stock, cut it to length, and bevel it on a lathe for a reasonable fee.If you're working with small diameter pipe, say 2" sch 80, you can bevel that yourself with a grinder.  It's really not that tough.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:thanks for the quick replies guys! If you dont mind, please check outmy other post I made about the harbor freight TIG welder. You will be able to see what I am trying to do, and maybe answer some of the other questions I have
Reply:BTW, I'm thinking at least 6" pipe, at least 1/4" thick.
Reply:Try a local welding shop that works with pipe.JTMcC.
Reply:I'd go with just do it yourself. It is pretty quick and easy with little practice. Buy a length is pipe in the size you want, hack off the stubs for practice, bevel, and weld. Unless you are getting into pipe bigger than about 4", or doing a large number of preps, a beveler is really not needed. You can help things when grinding on the bevel if you have a pipe lathe (threading machine), metal lathe, or can rig up something to firmly hold the pipe and rotate it while you grind, but doing it strictly by hand isn't bad. Laying the prep on 2"NPS schedule 80 only takes a couple of minutes with nothing more than a hand grinder.
Reply:You should go to the control panel and fill in your location. If you were anywhere near me I could bevel all the pipe you wanted
Reply:I'm in Williamstown NJ, near Atalntic City and Philadelphia
Reply:Check the larger plumbing supply outlets if you are unable to do so yourself.  Many cut to length and some pre-prep ends to order (threaded, beveled, plain end, grooved, etc.)  If you can do it yourself, keep in mind doing the prep gives you that practice as well.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:duane, thanks  for the advice. Any tips on beveling with a torch? I'm pretty sure its supposed to be a 60 degree angle on the bevel. Depending, on size, id keep a 1/16-1/4 face. To keep straight line and square, I guess id use a piece of flatbar or something?
Reply:it aint my business but it seems you should learn these things for yourself...many skills are needed ..not just the act of laying in a bead...folks here will help if you ask.
Reply:I'm learning. Just asking general questions to get started. Ive been doing structural for the past 4 years, but want to get into pipe. I'm gonna order the pipefitter/welder procedure book. I just need to freshen my memory on pipe. Plus, I wont have the convinience of the tools that where at tech school for pipe. You're right though, I should get used to doing the prep work from scratch
Reply:you need to learn to grind a bevel before you learn to weld if you came on my job to test and couldnt grind a bevel on your coupon id run you off right there before i even seen ur welding theres not alot of jobs youll be on that will have track torches and beveling machines that is just a luxury that you dont need to get used to i know that its usually the fitters job but i like to see the fitter and welder working together and how can you know what you like or show someone what you want if you cant do it your selfComplete Fabrication Shop specializing in pipe fabrication. Reply:Thank you for the advice Scuba. I understand now that it will be required in pipewelding in the field to be able to bevel the pipe. I have no problems doing this, as working as an ironworker in the field, things dont always go smooth. Would you be able to recommend some good books on pipewelding for the beginner? The only pipe I did was in school, and we used a pipe beveler wheel with torch to make the bevels.I have the pipe welding proceedures book right now I am reading. I am layed off right now, and am wanting to practice pipe, and have been trying to get into my local Pipefitter UA.
Reply:hire on some where as a fitter or welder helper and you will get all the practice you needComplete Fabrication Shop specializing in pipe fabrication. Also offering heavy steel fabrication and sheet metal work.
Reply:have you tried your local community college yet?  This is where I first started the process of learning to weld. It was inexpensive and we had a teacher that knew what he was doing.  Have you tried talking to the ua  local?  Where I'm at, if you show that you can weld they will let you come in to practice to prepare for the entrance weld test.  They don't take everybody, you have to show some real talent and commitment.  just my .02Local 597 PipefittersCertified stick and tig pipe welderLincoln Ranger 305g - for saleMiller 185 migMiller Digital Elite
Reply:thanks guys. been layed off from welding for almost a year now. Ive been working as a general contracting/ plumbers helper doing commercial jobs. Ive sent in several resumes for welding jobs, specifically welder/fitter.I graduated community college Technical welding course about 4 years ago. 10 month course, 4 nights/week 3 1/2 hours a night, plus I was working in a structural shop, then after I graduated tech school, I joined the road crew and did that for almost 3 years. Got into firestairs, and really enjoyed it (more challenging).Just from being a plumbers helper, opened my eyes up to piping systems, which I enjoy as much, if not more than firestairs. As far as the UA, I have already signed up at my Pipefitters/plumbers local, and take the test the 23rd of this month. But, like I have said, I am notgetting my hopes up of getting in. The cordinator said that they have only accepted 20 apprentices in the past 2 years.
Reply:sounds like you're on the right track.  did you ask the coordinator if you could come in and practice there?Local 597 PipefittersCertified stick and tig pipe welderLincoln Ranger 305g - for saleMiller 185 migMiller Digital Elite
Reply:Hey njmm313,You don't need to torch to bevel. It is much easier to just bevel pipe with a grinder with a 1/4" grinding wheel. Take it slow and wear all the proper safety equipment (face shield, ear plugs, good leather gloves and safety glasses. Only takes a few minutes on 6" schedule 40 (standard wall) pipe. The standard bevel suppose to be 37 1/2 degrees. I weld with more steep of a angle because I want to get done fast. More angle less weld. I welded about ten) 6" and(five) 3" pipe welds today along with some o-lets. All tig root and cap. I took a few pics. I will post them in pics area if you would like to take a look. Nothing special. Just another day at the work place.I am not trying to push you to bevel your own pipe and do not do it if you feel that uncomfortable doing it. I weld and bevel pipe everyday at work so it just another day for me. If you do decide to just practice common sense safety.Later,Welding School GuyBasic and advanced welding information at my online Welding School.
