Help Need on Arc welding Schematic AC/DC

I am planning to make an Arc welding for about say 300 Amps. Need help & advice in getting a Schematic drawing? Will any one help in getting me a Good Arc welding Schematic (1 / 3 Phase)? I would buy a Transformer & then build the AC/DC circuits required for this welding.Thanks,RegardsJohn
Reply:Hi Ya John,   was that a typo "I am planning to make an Arc welding for about say 300 Amps"  Did you mean that you are planning to build your own arc welder?If so from a safety standpoint I would not recommend that you build one. If you build one and something goes wrong like it setting your house on fire. Your insurance company upon investigation and a report from the fire dept finding "Faulty Wiring On Part of The Owner" will not payoff on your fire insurance. That info comes from a friend of mine that is a LT of Fire/Police and field inspector an upstate NY fire dept. There are plenty of good arc welders available out there at reasonable prices. There are also plenty of good used ones. I have a Lincoln Tombstone 225 (oh tombstone cause it looks like a tombstone)  Talk to anyone here on the site before you put yourself at risk by building an arc welder.Otherwise you might become that ole fable of Jack jumped over the candlestick except in this case you could become part of that burning candlestick.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:My bet is that you can buy a welder cheaper the you can buy a suitable transformer.  Better yet , buy a used welder . A used basic AC/DC welder maybe $200 , just an AC welder a $100. Why not buy a used AC welder and some big surplus diodes and may a DCwelder? You wont get much of a transformer for a 100 bucks. Check ebay and the pawn shops they're out there.Tough as nails and damn near as smart

All the responses were of very useful information to rethink on my project.I just want to make this project for my hobby & learning interest only.I have a welding AC Power Source, so to make this project simple & after seeing the responses, I see that it is better to convert this AC Power Source to a AC/DC Power Source. I looked into the schematics & I have attaching the same. Reply:My advice would be to just sell your AC unit and buy an AC/DC model, you would be money ahead!After all, this site isn't called Welder design "Mechanics and theory of operation" its just plain Ole welding web "General Welding Questions", where weldors and welding enthusiasts can get together and talk about welding!But if you have your heart set on building one, more power to ya, and good luck!Ken.#1.
