Arm Support during Welding

When welding on a large piece of steel that's going to heat up, is it properto put your elbows on your knees rather than have your forearms rest on the work?I suspect it would quickly get uncomfortably hot if it's more than a few spot welds.
Reply:Put them wherever you're comfortable.  In fact, do whatever you have to to keep comfortable.  On odd sections of plate/pipe that were tough to get at, I used to fold an old leather glove in half, put a heat shield on the material side, and tie it to my palm/wrist/forearm/whatever was touching to keep from getting burned.
Reply:Something that works for me, is to get comfortable at the end point of the weld, and then reach back to where you want to start welding. This way, as the weld progresses, you get more comfortable as you go and as you tire. A little counter-intuitive maybe...
