I was wondering if any of you guys could help me with explaining how these are welded? The part where the mesh meets the frame, there is a bent piece of metal and the mesh is sandwiched between the two, I assume it's welded.Anyone know how it's done? Thanks for your help
Reply:CarefullyMy best guess is spot welding, or resistance  welding using rollers to compress and weld at the same time.Just my  opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:Wouldn't ya just know  Happen to have one of those babies right here in front of meI can say with authority that they're crimped/formed, not welded Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:The one angly thingy might have some small welds on it, but I think that's the only one(your second pic)"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Awesome, is there a machine of some sort that does the "crimping"
Reply:generally the mesh will have a folded over and flattened seam, so as the rim wont just slide off. Then the outer rim is put on and ussually a press brake will crimp it down.If your looking for something to try and make something like this my recomendation would be a manual sheet metal brake or finger brake. with it youll be able to bend and crimp the mesh parts and fold over the outer rim and crimp them all together. Youll just need to get a roller sheet metal cutter and your just about all set for production.ill also add a even cheaper way would be to get a duckbill vice grip and a flat table with a hammer and hand do it, tho it will never be near as niceLast edited by cogax; 03-20-2009 at 11:25 PM.
Reply:I make things similar to that all the time for machine guards and light security enclosures.    I form the edging in my press brake using knife dies and then smash it onto the expanded with a flattening die.   Some times if the customer wants I can tack the edge form shut or spot weld the edge trim to the expanded.    Usually where two pieces of the edge trim meet I will tack or carefully weld the miter.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
