Is there a trick or is it even possible to welding spring steel? My grandpa has an old pistol that he can no longer get parts for and said a small flat spring about as thin as a banding strap was broken and asked if I would be able to weld it back together. I could use some help. I think it is the spring for the hammer. If it can be welded, does it have to be heat treated again to put spring back in it? Would I have to anneal it first? My Babies:MillerMatic 185Thermal Arc 300SHobart StickMate AC/DC 235/160Dalex Werke Spot WelderOh and the wife and kids are important too!
Reply:It would be easier to just make a new spring, even if it is attached to some part, than to repair the old one.
Reply:You can weld it, but it will never be the same, even after tempering.Best thing to do is take the spring & frame to a qualified gunsmith. They could make a new one for it, for less trouble than you would have in repairing the old one.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:What kind of pistol and which spring? Parts for old guns are oftentimes not as difficult to find as you might think. There are parts dealers (duh) as well as forums just like this one for gun collectors.Tim |
