Ok I went out to purchase my first full argon bottle yesterday. Location: Robert's Oxygen in Northern VAI was told they only allow yearly rentals on large bottles. They do not even refill customer owned bottles. It was $75 for some hazmat fee.... $75 for filling... $100+ for something else... another fee for something..At the end of the day to walk out with a large argon bottle filled it was $375!!!Is that really what those things go for???The smaller knee high bottle was ~$275 and I would own it at the end of the day. What should I be expecting to pay?
Reply:What size bottle was the one for $75.00 to fill?I rented an 80cf, had to give $100.00 deposit that I will get back if I turn the bottle back in, yearly rental is like $12.00 and that includes all fees, and a fill is $24.00 for C25.#1. Reply:I should have mentioned that I got it through an old timey auto parts store here locally! If I wanted one from the LWS, it would have been considerably more, I guess if the place is making all its money from such things, it has to charge more to stay in business, the auto parts store started this as a service for its customers way back when we didn't have a local LWS, and had to drive 70 miles round trip to go get one!#1. Reply:Great parts store BTW, featuring OEM parts, as well as some after market stuff thats a bit cheaper. One of those old time parts places. walk in the front door onto old hard wood floors that creak and crack when you walk across it, walk up to the parts counter and sit down on a bar stool kind of place!Last edited by Ken Dennis; 03-28-2009 at 12:23 PM.#1. Reply:bottles are pretty expensive. i had that happen to me and i said no more of that. i started looking on ebay peddlers post craigslist for ppl selling cylinders. get em cheap and all you have to do is pay for the refills. now i have more cylinders than I know what to do with. maybe i will shoot a couple of them across the field hahaonly thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:The large bottle was either a 110 or 150 cf size. I don't do a hell of a lot of welding but don't want to be swapping out cylinders often. How long does a 80cf typically last? I don't know what I was thinking but the price of the tank seems so damn high. I need to shop around more.
Reply:depends on how much you use it. depends also on the volume of gas you use. if you use 40 cfh then the cylinder should last 2 hours of straight weld time.only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld
Reply:I average about 15cfh, at that rate, the 80cf will last about 5.33 hours of welding time, of which is a lot of actual welding time, since most of my welds don't take more than a few seconds, the longest I have done with it, it took a little over a minute, on a long continuous bead I did on my trailer!I got this tank late last fall, and am still using its first fill, but I am running a little low right now, getting ready to go after another bottle!Hey El-Loydeo!I don't live far from you, how about selling me a couple of those bottles, I'll come over and pick them up along with a chunk of that plate that you was selling!#1. Reply:John Falk sounds familiar, but most of the people that I grew up with from here have mostly moved away!I was an over the road truck driver for about 23 years, and spent most of my time out making money, so I was hardly ever home, I just gave all that up last fall to start my own business here locally, so I am almost a stranger in my own home town!#1. Reply:I pay 12.50 to fill up an 80cf that I own. Straight argon. I dont recall what I pay for the Co2/argon mix but I remember getting a ten pound roll of .30 wire and a fill for 19.50A&L gas in Pasco, Washington. Go see Mike P. (for those of you in the area)Bill
Reply:Here in PA it is $200 for a 99 year lease on a 80cf tank.  $20-30 to fill it I think.

Reply:I seen this same thing on another site that we where discussing the price at.And the prices that those people paid at their locals there was being reported as all over the place just like here!Makes you wonder just what the heck the real price is!My Lws charges 19.99 for an 11# roll of weldmark .030 70S6 wire, and on average, its 17.00 for a 5# container of general use welding rod like 6011, 6013, 7014, 7018 and so on.#1. Reply:i just don't see the need to go to my lws unless i need gas or i need something that cant wait. you really do save big money when you shop online. its a shame its that way, but these lws's order that wire from the same place the online stores do and they could pass the savings on if they wanted. i can think of 3 reasons to go there.1. i need gas2. i need something right away3. the girl who works there is pretty cuteonly thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weldI bought an 80cf bottle of Argon and one of Argon / CO2 for $150 each filled.  But then again I know a guy at AIrgas that gets me a discount.  Plus he gets me free refills. My Babies:MillerMatic 185Thermal Arc 300SHobart StickMate AC/DC 235/160Dalex Werke Spot WelderOh and the wife and kids are important too!
Reply:used to have a buddy who worked at a supply store in fort wayne.....got a lot of good deals through him. bought 10 pounds of nickle rod from the guy he was training for 11 bucks. i still have about half of it. i just saw it last night in my fridge. my fridge is where i keep rods grinding wheels cover plates fluxes etc. i used to keep beer in it but then the darn thing quit workin!only thing worse than an ugly woman is an ugly weld

Reply:There getting it monopalized, (spelling?) Here ya can't buy your own bottle, if ya have one (I had two) they won't fill em. Ya gotta lease a bottle ($125) that's for 5 year lease, then when it's empty ya bring it in and get a new full bottle, I have 90cf and it is about $55???? to fill. I should say "exchange"    Nice racket they got going here,,,,,,,,,
Reply:Just got one from the LWS full for 240.00 out the door filled with 75/25 and its mine . Two weeks later I get two off of  craigslist for 150.00, one half full of helium and the other I had filled with 100% argon . Just a note, if you buy from anyone prvate , call the local AWS and tell them what the top of the tank says to make sure its not a leased or stolen tank. I lease my Oxy/Acet due to the fact  that you cannot own the huge tanks. Now for me ,one trip a year and not three for oxy refills.
Reply:Sucks but I've been driving around like mad trying to find a place open on the weekend to buy gas. There is an Airgass not too far away from me but none of their prices are listed online. Anyone have experience with them? Even tractor supply doesn't do argon...odd.
Reply:after  how they treated you i am afraid you are gonna be pregnant.....
Reply:My air gas is closed on Saturday   argon was like 63.00 to fill here used to be 54.00..150' cyl I've owned for a while as i'm  grandfathered in I guess.   I gotta get some junkers and recycle them before it's too late )  They turn people away every day with owned tanks. no new accounts unless you open an account and lease. Hydro test is eatin them alive on all these old junker tanks  that's what they told me here They all got a pile of them out backdamn robbers anyway be happy to get gas at all I guessLast edited by Tony D; 03-29-2009 at 11:37 AM.Reason: cyl size oopsLincoln 225 Tombstone,Miller Big 20,Hobart 180,150' Argon,A/D hobart hood 22 Ton Log splitter,79 F350 dump eats 4.75 TONS and still turns cutters, grinders,And a  Hypertherm POWERMAX 30

Reply:I thought you might be!Yeah! You do have to watch what you buy from C Henry, not all that is outside is junk, some of it is bad mill runs but a lot of it is good steel that is just rusty a bit or may be an end mill piece!Right now his price is .30 cents a pound for the stuff out in the yard and 035 cents a pound for the good stuff inside the warehouse.I think they may be owned by the same person that owns Midwest, cause I have been sent across the street to pick up some pieces that I paid for at the C Henry sales counter#1. Reply:We have Roberts Oxygen here in Waynesboro Va as well.  I bought the small Argon bottle, which they just exchange when I need a refill.  I think the last time I had it filled it was $85.00but at least I own the bottle. Not a beginner, not a pro !
Reply:I just bought a bottle i think it was 250 to buy and 25 to refill it
Reply:Wow... prices seem to be all over the place... as little as $12 all the way up to $75 for a fill?!?!

Reply:Here in Parkersburg,WV they will fill the medium and small bottles but will not fill the big bottles unless you have a contractors lic. and rent from them. I'm not sure what argon is here but to fill an oxy bottle it was around $80.00 for a medium bottle and they just do the swap out.[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]weekend metal melter and all around pain

Reply:SCORE!!!!! I remember I had an old 5lb brand new filled Co2 tank laying around that I was going to use for my aquarium. I decided to take it in to Airgass and see what they could give me for it. I walked in and the guy took me to the back. He said he could do an even trade for the similar size c25 tank. I said I don't think that would be nearly enough for the weeks worth of welding I'll be doing. He paused for a little and told me to grab the 40cf tank and bring it back when I was done!! He kept my 5lb Co2. No paper work... nothing! Just out the door.I needed some scrap 1/8 steel coupons to dial in my mig. I didn't have anything nearly that size at home. I decided to head across town to a large metal supplier. They told me to walk around the warehouse and point out anything I needed and let one of the guys measure it and write it down for pricing. I eventually found some 6"x11" strips that would be perfect. I grabbed quite a few and gave them to this guy. He pauses... asked where I parked.. and then told me to bring my car up to the loading door. I run around, grab the car, he tells me to pop the trunk, he loads it, and then tells me to scram. That's it! No paper work, no $$!!Wow... how much better can it get? Well I needed a bottle of argon to go with my tig so I searched around Craiglists. I found a guy 65+ miles north of me that had an 80cf Argon tanked filled out the door for $105!!! I'm just about to head out the door to pick it up. Just when I think my life is as ****ty as it can get and when all else fails. Just when I think I'm dragging along with the rest of the scum on the bottom of the pond... little things like this sorta bring a smile.. just sorta.. Last edited by yellow; 04-01-2009 at 11:35 AM.

Reply:I grew up in northern Va.  Between the traffic, illegal immigrants, common senseless government workers and watching it all come to my small town I was outta there after college.  I know the Roberts Oxygen you're talking about and unless you're already an established customer with credit, you can forget it.  I now live in Pa and all the welding supply stores that I applied for credit with, accepted me with no problems.  They all are willing to work with me and I rarely ever have a problem.  $375 for one bottle of Argon is rediculous but given its in the Washington DC metro area, money and stupidity rule and you're outta luck.
