gear box housing

hey guys i got a gear box or chain case off of a john deer gator that has a small maybe 1/4 inch hole in it that needs repaired pretty strait forward.  my only question is it does not seem to be aluminum i believe it is magnesium or manganese is this right? if so what do i need to do different to fix the problem.  thankswww.burdettenetworks.com
Reply:Got a picture?  I can't picture it being made of magnesium.  You could collect some shavings from it and hit them with a torch.  If it goes up like a roman candle, then it might be.  Will a magnet stick to it?  Be careful if you weld on it.  It's fumes are toxic and not really safe for you to breath - it's been linked to Parkinsons.

Reply:If it's magnesium, get an appropriate magnesium filler metal.  Aluminum filler will make welds that look good, but have no strength or ductility.  If I remember what my welding instructor told me correctly, a TIG arc will have a green tint if the base metal is magnesium.If you're grinding, filing, or machining and it is magnesium be careful with the chips and debris.  Small magnesium chips can ignite and start fires; especially when mixed with chips and shavings of aluminum, iron, or around water.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Hey, gizzardguts, we are almost neighbors. The only reason I can think of for you choosing that name is if you fish in the Pecos with shad guts.  I spent a few days in underground maintenance in a potash mine over there years ago.As to fixiing the hole, my two cents is tap it wirh the appropriate sized pipe tap and screw a pipe plug with thread sealeant in it.
Reply:I seined (sp) for shad many times in the Spring in my younger years. Used the guts on trot lines. Gizzardgutz came about trying to find a unique username no one else was using.
