I have a old atlas lathe that has a part broken that is made from a material called "Zamac". I have read that soldering or brazing will not work on the metal. What is the best way to connect these part together again. The part is a 3 eared bracket that holds a small set of gears and one of the ears is broke off.
Reply:Type zinc alloy in the forum search....it doesn't look good.maniak
Reply:Your best bet is to contact Atlas which I believe is now owned by clausing, and order a replacement piece.  You aren't gonna have much luck attempting to repair it.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:Lots of Atlas lathe parts can be found on Ebay.Rex
Reply:Can't you fab  a new one?  Try some of that Alumaloy stuff? It is supposed to do zinc too.
Reply:Could you post a pic of the piece in question?  I have a couple old atlas lathes.  If I knew the piece you are talking about I might could give you an alternative.  In most that I have seen the Gears were Zamac, but everything else for the most part was steel or aluminum.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:If you can find a serial/model no. then give Clausing a call to see what's available1-800-535-6553I've dealt with them, and they're pretty nice people to talk to."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Depending on the complexity and required strength of the piece, don't discount repairing it via mechanical means. If that is not sucessful, consider attemping to cast a new piece yourself! Aluminum is relatively easy to cast and if the part is not very complex building the sand mold should also be trival.
Reply:TRIVIAL!!!!!!!!  I wouldn't know where to begin making a moldAnd I got no way to melt the metal"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:You may also be able to get the part from sears believe it or not.  One of my atlas lathes what sold by sears and the parts are still available for the most part.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
