I have a Miller 200 MIG set up for welding mild steel with a Victor flowmeter that I have been having trouble with. The welder sat for about 4 years un-used when I picked it up last summer for $400. I went a picked up the tank and f\started welding. Within an hour of welding my flowmeter let out a quick puff and started hissing out of the saftey valve in the back. I was still getting good flow to the weld and continued to finish the piece. I replace the meter soon after. I bought another Victor flowmeter on eBay. Today I was welding my pipes up on my bike... same thing happened again. I took both apart, cant find anything wrong. cleaned it, put it back together and opened the bottle. still hissing out argon. I cant be buying new meters every 2 weeks. Anybody know what the problem could be? I would like to know why its blowing out and how to fix it? Thanks for any help.
Reply:Both flowmeter are venting out the relief valve.  This the result of the seat valve failure in the regulator/flowmeter.  The relief valves are doing just what they are designed to do.  The seat is allowing shielding gas to leak by whick build pressure in body of the flowmeter, when the pressure reaches the relief valve preseat pressure it vents.  The flowmeters need to be rebuilt.  Victor sell rebuild kits for  both of these flowmeter, you need to contact a repair facility that sells parts.  Or you can have them rebuilt by a repair shop.  I charge $40.00 to total rebuild and test these flowmeters.OAdoctorwww.regulatortorchrepair.com
Reply:my ace hardware store can get parts you might check them if you have one close by  or  send to --AOdoctor -- thats not a bad price
Reply:I will ask since the OP has not yet.Why are the relief valves building up enough pressure to open them? There has to be something causing this, no?

Reply:Originally Posted by OAdoctorjh225,Your Question. The relief valves ae not building pressure the regulator part of the flowmeter is building pressure. The relief is ported into the low pressure side of the regulator that is part of the flowmeter.  When the pressure builds to the setting on the releif valves, they relieve the pressure in the regulator part of the flowmeter. It is the same thing when you set an oxygen or acetylene regulator and the pressure climbs over time.  The only difference is you do not have a delivery gauge on the flowmeter to see that the pressure is climbing.
Reply:So in theory, a standard set of dial gauges would be a better choice as you can set and/or watch pressure as needed, no?
Reply:Thanks for the info. Ill talk to my local welding supply on monday. I understand why it is doing it, Im just curious as to what caused it. Line blockage? Clogged nozzle? I can rebuild the safety blow off to its factory specs but if there is an underlying problem that cause the safety blow off to open in the first place I have to find the issue no?
Reply:The more likely cause of the failure was disuse/age.  Some of the stuff inside of a flowmeter is comparable to weld consumables.  Different, but the same.  Nothing that flexes lasts forever, i.e., stuff happensScottMiller XMT 350 CC/CV w/gas solenoid opt.Miller S-22A wirefeederBernard 400A "Q" gunMiller Spoolmatic 30A / WC-24C-K 200A torch/gas lensWeldcraft WC-18 watercooled torchHypertherm Powermax 30Victor O/A
Reply:Dmaxer, I hear you on that, but I tore into the safety blow off on both flowmeters and the O-rings are in great shape. I know the seal isnt bad. As for misuse, do you think I could have had to much flow? I was set  at 25 CFH. Im sure I could have gone lower (between 15-20 CFH) but Im welding in a windy enviroment. I have been using Miller 220 and 200 set ups  since 2005 and never had this problem. I didnt have a flowmeter on the Miller 220, I just had a regulator and never had an issue. But this flow meter thing is getting anoying.
Reply:from looking at your picture  its just the flow meter-- no dialed gauge  I use a dialed gauge (tank pressure) then the flow meter that way you can see whats in the tank .. volume/pressure in the tank

Reply:chopperkid13,  You did not see anything wrong with the safety because there is nothing wrong with them. The relief valves on your flowmeter are fine (as long as you put them back together correctly).    When a safety or relief valve leaks, vents or fails it is almost always due to the failure of the regulator.  Your flowmeter are accually regulator/flowmeters.  The regulator part takes the cylinder pressure and drops down to the pressure the flowmeter is rated at (on a Victor that pressure is the last two digits...HRF1425 has a flowmeter rated @25psi) and the flowmeter part allow you to set your desired flow. The relief valves are as much your problem as a smoke alarm that goes of in the middle of night is the problem.   Noone wouldn't go stand under the smoke alarm and wonder why it is buzzing.  They would go find the source of the smoke.  The venting relief  valve is an indication that your regulator is not working properly.  As what caused the problem, my guess is that the seat material has started to go bad or you have some debris in the valve seat.  Either way, the problem is only going to get worse until they are unusable. As to your question about using a devise with two gauges. A flowgauge has two guages like a regular Oxygen reglator, except the delivery side measures CFH not psi. But is not as accurate as a flowmeter.    Please let us know if you get any good info from you LWS.  I have found many of them lack general knowledge about gas apparatus.OAdoctorwww.regulatortorchrepair.com
