I wanted to build small bird cages from scratch but not sure what equipment to use.  I am an amateur.  The wires are 12 guage.  Someone told me to just solder them together.  Didn't give me much more info.  Then I was told to use a spot welder.  Where do I go from here?  I also want speed. ( Not the drug).

Reply:I don't mean to be argumentative but what kind of bird would need 12-gauge wire to be caged? That is pretty heavy duty for any bird. I would think even chicken wire would work, and therefore welding it is over-kill. If it has to do with aesthetics, and 12-gauge wire refers to copper "electrical" wire, then soldering would be "speedy" and work just fine. But I would recommend a Weller soldering gun in this case, or at least something with 40 watts or better. Steve Last edited by rookie_steve; 06-18-2009 at 04:56 AM.JunkYard Tools .com
Reply:Thanks for the help guys.  As to what kind of bird needs a 12 gauge wire cage, well, they are show cages which are not actually for long term holding of the bird.  Its for exhibiting the bird and thats what is usually used although I have seen them use 18 gauge.

Reply:Gatelocked, I imagine you would be limited by the material you are working with. An oxy-acetylene torch outfit could do the job or a tig machine would also work. Beyond those two, the small diameter wire is going to be hard to work with, I can not say if a spot welder would work, sorry, I've never used one of them.Maybe MAPP gas could solder wire in that size, but the wire would have to be compatable with the solder, I don't do a lot of soldering, other than wire and pipe, but they are always copper.Last edited by tanglediver; 06-24-2009 at 02:20 AM.City of L.A.
