Well, I have a new project in mind and need some welding advice or guidance.I was given a Wheel Chair Washing machine from work today.  This thing is huge, about 5'x8' all stainless steel I think about 14 gauge.  My plans are to cut the welds & break it down to flat panels, then either take it to a buddy for shearing, or just get out the grinder & cut it.No real ideas other than I need a couple stainless pans to hold some manganese solution & hot water to parkerize some rifles.  I'll have lots of stainless left over.My welding question is, I know I need Argon for gas with my Hobart (might try out the Lincoln as it has a narrower bead) and stainless wire.  My other option is to learn to gas weld it.  I've never gas welded stainless, GMAW it I could do, just need the wire & Argon.  I could do the gas welding if I get a bottle of O2.  I'll probably have to build a brake to bend this stuff & know it has to be bent "all at once" as it will work harden.  Maybe anneal it with the torch?I've never worked with much stainless & I figured this is for free, so I could build a couple things before I go on to something more extensive.  I suppose I could hit up Joker here & see if he would TIG it for me, but don't want to put him out of time or consumables.  Besides I've had a couple rough weeks at work, need to take out my frustrations on something that won't fight back too hard.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:There's no reason you can't do this with a MIG. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I'm a stick welder, not a MIG welder, but I have welded SS with MIG in a classroom setting and a shop setting both. In the late '80s I attended a couple of semesters at the local college for SS MIG for the nuclear industries. We used .035 hard wire and 75/25. Welded up to 1/2". With 14 ga. you'd use smaller wire, but argon or 75/25 is an option. When the settings are right ( I forget what we were taught for settings, haven't done this for YEARS ) SS welds as easily as mild steel, maybe easier. Sounds like you'll have material to PLAY with, have fun!Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:If you're going to mig it (personally, with that gauge material I'd tig it) and have to get the gas anyway, get a small bottle of tri-mix.  Straight argon will NOT work with the mig.  C25 will not preserve the corrosion resistance of the SS.If you're going to do it with mig, at least do it with the correct covering gas.I suspect when you start tearing into that machine, you're going to find that the SS "skin" is considerably thinner than 14ga.SS is not hard to mig weld, however SS does not like heat.  It will warp to beat the band.  That's where pulsed tig becomes one's friend.Syncro 250 DX Dynasty 200 DXMM 251 w/30A SG XMT 304 w/714 Feeder & Optima PulserHH187Dialarc 250 AC/DCHypertherm PM 1250Smith, Harris, Victor O/ASmith and Thermco Gas MixersAccess to a full fab shop with CNC Plasma, Water Jet, etc.
Reply:Will the stainless stand up to the pickling solution, if not you’re wasting your time.
Reply:I did not know that about Argon wouldn't work with MIG.  I just assumed it would because that's the preferred gas for TIG welding.Transit, yes it will hold up to the pickling solution.  In fact it has to either be stainless or plastic of some sort.  Problem is application of heat to the solution as it has a very narrow temperature range to work in - 170 to 190 degrees.  It will eat away any black iron or standard ER70 wire used to weld it.  The other tank I have was soldered after it was folded & works very good.  You have to put iron filings (bandsaw cuttings work too) of mild steel in the solution to activate it.  I don't have a huge soldering iron or a finger brake to bend this up, so it's only going to have 4 bends then welded at the corners. It may not be 14 gauge, but it's awful heavy.  It's not as heavy as 12 gauge, but not as light as 16 gauge either.  I have small samples of mild steel sheet I used in other areas to compare with.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Info on parkerizing is located here:http://www.calvan.com/html/what_is_parkerizing.htmlBrownell's has a good procedure for parkerizing, as does many other forums.  I've got 4 rifles I need to parkerize, have one tank I bought for about $150 years ago, but no pre/post hot water tanks.  As this stainless is free (all cut up will be close to 4-4x8 sheets of stainless) I figured I could build one or two for myself & others if they turn out ok.I also want an excuse to build a brake & press.  Maybe the girlfriend will release the bank account long enough for me to get stuff I need for those projects too????Last edited by MarkBall2; 06-25-2009 at 01:34 PM.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Not that it really matters.  You can either weld it, or not, given the thickness and difficulties involved12ga.....  .104614ga.......   .074716ga.......   .0598Buy a cheap mic, and you never have to guess again"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
