i am new to welding, just about 3 months in. trying to teach myself as i go to get a head start on school in sept because i paralized my rightarm and dont want to fall behind. Every thing is going good except the thin metals. i tried to weld some sheet metal with 3/32 6011 (all i had) at alll different amps and it just melted away. I got a bunch of old carts that were welded together that were made by 1"x1" angle iron, i cut them apart and started making some stufff out of them but they didnt weld as nice as i thought they would. Some tacs would take and some would burn through, same with a bead. But if i tried to weld 2 pieces together it just wants to burn away. I read somewhere on the internet that a  3/32 6011 could do sheet metal so i figured the angle iron wouldnt be a problem. do i need a diff rod, is there a trick to it or simply just lots of practice? any help would help oh my welder is a Thermal Arc 160S
Reply:Practice I'm thinking. I will be the first to admit that my stick welding sucks. I have been bizzy as of late, but back in the March and April time frame was practicing at least an hour a day trying to get down stick on sheet thickness. Lot of blow outs and frustration at first and I still don't have it down to my satisfaction. You don't say what thickness your material is but I was doing OK with 6011 on 14 gage 3"square tube butt welding it together. Was even getting to the point were I could get it to keyhole even. Was setting the machine to 45 amps DCEN. Good fit up is extremely important and step your welds. You might want to try 6013 rod also. I like 6011 better only cause I see the puddle better than on 6013. But one advantage I like on 6013 is that I could see the HAZ zone of the weld start to change color right before it blows out, I don't get that with 6011 it just blows.DaKK
Reply:Sheet metal is were MIG and TIG shines, Stick has it's limits, you can help it out running the welds down hill and using a backer plate, there is even some 1/16th rod that can hold an arc better at low amps, but it's still pretty much driving screws with a hammer.Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:I have welded 16 gauge all day long with that rod. I don't know your machine. Is it AC or DC. I mostly use DCR, But 6011 welds nice enough on AC. If your machine is a DC and you are running it in DCS. It will blow right through it. I have actually used 6011 and 6010 in straight polarity to blast away rusty garbage steel when it was to bad for a torch and I didn't have air with me for carbon arc. Thinner metal needs a shorter arc. You have to keep it real tight and steady.Lincoln Ranger 8                        Lincoln 175                          Drill pressLincoln 225 mig                            Plasma                              8 ft brake        52" jump shear
Reply:I don't know what gauge it is, how do I find out? it's almost like paperthin though, this is just stuff i found laying around the garage and figured i would try and weld it.  I think I might practice for the weekend and get some1/16 rods on monday and give them a shot.  my welder is DC. I think I can get the angle iron down with practice, its hit and miss with that, i'll get the thickness today, this but the sheet metal blows holes soon as the rods touches it.theres a setting on my welder i was hoping somebody could explain me, it's a suitcase welder and has only 3 settings. Amp, Hot Start and Arc Gap. What is the Arc Gap setting for? it can fo from 0-100 i think, i just leave it at 10. is it how far the rod can be away from the metal er something? just curious.  I was Using another Thermal Arc 130S that had Amp and Hot Start. just curious. Thanks fellas
Reply:hj you al new to the forem just finsh welding shetmetal i found not too burn throu drag the rod on the metal
Reply:6011 is not the rod to use on thin sheet metal. 6011 is a deep penetration electrode. 6013 is a better rod to use on thinner sheet metal. I use  6011 for cutting and piercing holes on occasion because of it's deep penetration characteristics.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:should the 6013 be 1/16 or does it matter?
Reply:6013 works pretty good on thin stuff, at least it has for me.If you're having trouble blowing thru, make a wider bead on a flat weld.  It keeps the rod moving away from the thin edge for longer periods of time.I've never gotten the hang of using 6011 as an all around rod.  It bites too deep, and does it in a hurry.  I mainly limit it to thicker stuff.  But that's me.  Lot of pipe guys work with 6010 all day long from what I hear.Believe it, or not, I actually found 7018 easier to control on thinner materials(within limits).  6013 seems to actually put more heat into the metal to get a decent weld.  I can't explain it, but I've experienced it.  The 7018 seems to be a gentler arc, and does well depending on travel speed.  6013 gets the metal red hot, and piles metal instead of flowing it out nicely.  The 7018 with a higher travel speed makes nice penetration on thinner stuff, but does it without heat problems.Take this whole thing with a grain of salt.I don't stick weld anything thinner than 11ga.  If it's thinner the wire welder gets used. That used up a lot of bandwidth for totally usless information"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Well, actually I did some 14ga stuff with the stick a ways back,  very fast horizontal and flat welds.  And I mean fast!!!!"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:im starting to get the hang of the angle iron, i was welding a bit today with the 6011 rods at around 50 amps, it went alright, it seems like it wants to burns through on the edges the most. the angle iron is 3/16. i never even tried the sheet metal anymore. my cousin said he has some 6013 rods so im gonna try tomorow, and all i have is a tape measure lol, no feeler gauges  vernier calipers or micrometers. whats a good heat to run the 6013 at?

Reply:Originally Posted by gclampWanna read something funny? I have no clue as to amps for 6013. I haven't used it in 20 + years. If it  was that thin, it's mig time. The only rod we carried on the trucks was 3/32 and 1/8 6011 and 6010. 3/32 to 5/32 ... 7018 and some misc specialty rods. 6013  was the first rod I ever used summer of  "71" but I don't remember the amp settings that worked for me. Sorry
Reply:Yep, I follow what you are saying, but sounds like you are trying something that would frustrait even the most skilled. A 110 volt mig (best with gas and .023 wire) will do wonders on thin sheet down to 22- to 24 gauge. These units can be had very low cost, it could well pay for it's self in a days welding.  Actually for many things a mig is tlikely a very good way to go if you have only use of one arm, no changing rods no chipping just pull the trigger. Father inlaw lost his arm farming, amazing what he finds a way to do, some times takes a little longer and he might need to think it through a bit more, but he has always found a way.Lincoln PT185 TIGLincoln 175 MIGLincoln 240 amp AC StickLind Needle Arc plasma welderPlasma cutter, soon???
Reply:I'm with timberwolf, my original post I assumed you were talking about thicker sheet. I wouldn't even try stick on sheet that thin. Last edited by dakook; 07-05-2009 at 10:30 AM.Reason: spellingDaKK

Reply:What type of projects are you looking at.I really think you should look at a mig welder. One thing to keep in mind when welding sheet metal is that their is a lot more work to getting it cleaned up and ready for paint when stick welding where with a mig and gas, their is so little. Also all the flux needs to be 100% removed when dealing with stick before paint. If you are ever by Truro NS, drop me a note and I can let you try a mig and tig sometime.Miller DVI2Lincoln Precision Tig 225Thermodynamics Cutmaster 38Everything else needed.
Reply:i tried using the filler rod today, its impossible with my arm, way to fustrating. its not that i  have any projects lined up, i have lots of time on my hands, so figured id try some new stuff while i can.ya we usually take a feww trips up to hali on the bikes a year. my buddy is in the iwk now, he wrecked a few weeks ago, just came out of the coma a few days ago so i'll be heading up that way this week sometime
