Grips on locking welding clamps

I have a question regarding the use of locking clamps.  I have seen some of these (11R style) with grips on them.  Are grips preferred or do they just get wrecked and burnt when slag hits them? Do you guys use locking tools with grips or do you prefer the original Vise Grip style tool without grips?

Reply:I like the ones like Broccoli posted. Leverless, and you can just slide the rubber grip off.
