I recently picked up a well used Milwaukee paddle switch 4.5" grinder, and I have been nursing it back to help. I've replaced the cord, cleaned up around the motor, and now need to work on the gear box. The grinder runs pretty well, but sounds like the gear box oil is has either thinned too much or is simply too low. I honestly won't know I pull the head, so any recommendations on a gear box oil for the grinder (as well as an amount)?
Reply:I've replaced the gears in the head on my DeWalts. I've had very good luck with plain old chasis grease. Any good NLG2 ought to work fine. Don't use the red high temp grease, it's no good in cold weather"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Put a little grease in it. NOT oil, as the oil will be slung out of the vent.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Something more like wheel bearing grease

Reply:Not sure about the gears, I'll have to check when I pull the head off the grinder.
Reply:Here are a few pics of the gears in the head, which actually look pretty good. Doesn't look like there is any damage, but it does look like I need to add some grease. I am not sure what type of grease the factory red stuff is, but it really doesn't look like there is enough.Any ideas on how much should be added? I mean, are you supposed to pack the head, or will that cause a buildup of heat?
Reply:Just looking at the pics i would not add much to it. As i said earlier if you pack the head it's probably gonna sling grease all out of the vent or even down into the motor. I've seen them do both.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:The red grease I use at work (Mobil/Esso Epic 102) is a semi synthetic grease. It's very good for ALL operating conditions, hot or cold.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720 |
