transporting argon/co2 tank

Do you guys have your tank/refill delivered to you or do you just get yours and put it in the back of your pickup truck? If in the back,how do you strap it safely?

Reply:Lay it down in the bed, chock it so it doesn't move, and don't drive like a knucklehead.Remember that if you lay down acetylene tanks, you need to store them in an upright position for a few hours before using them.  Then ensures that the media and acetone inside are settled into the proper position and won't get sucked into the valve.All other types of tanks commonly used for welding can be stored and used from any position.  It's only the acetylene that needs to be upright.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:While I'm set up for delivery, I usually just go pick up the tank. In the pickup I have a coulp of big 4"x4" 1/2" thick chunks of angle iron I use as chocks to keep the tank from moving around. The other trucks I can either lay them down or strap them upright to the side wall or ladder rack.

Reply:Laying a tank full of high pressure gas horizontal position is not a good idea. I checked the OSHA regs and it’s a BIG BIG NO-NO to transport any gas cylinder in the horizontal position. The cylinder MUST be in the up-right position and secured from moving in all directions. You’re taking a big chance if anything goes wrong, no insurance and jail time.

Reply:I agree.For what it's worth, for the smaller inert gas hobby tanks I usually have no problem throwing them in the trunk of my car, no reg, protective cap on. Anything larger than 80cf or anything active goes a pickup truck.

Reply:Transit, do you have a link to that OSHA reg? I'm thinking that the reg may or may not apply to many, as a personel vehicle would not fall under OSHA regs, but would probably fall under DOT regs for transport.
