Reply:A 4X8 sheet of 14 gauge near Dallas is $55 right now. Can't help on the tube, haven't priced it.Just call a local steel yard and ask, they will tell you any price you ask about. I do it all the time when planning out a project.
Reply:My local steel supplier has 1x1x.065 steel square tube for $6.95 per 20 foot stick.   Price decreases as quantity ordered increases. My other local steel supplier has 4'x10' sheets of 10 ga cold rolled steel for $99 and 14 ga for  $55.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Thanks, I was wanting a general idea and you have all helped. I noticed that steel prices vary alot in hardwares and for the most part if you buy a small amount from a hardware to finnish a job, you realy cheat yourself by not just buying from a steel company instead. I purchased a 20' 1"x1" 1/8" thick piece from a local trailer builder for $20.00. Was that good or bad? I do very little metal work right now, but plan to do alot in the future and so I will need to get wise to how to deal on price for materials and jobs.
Reply:$20 for that tube isn't great but isn't robbery either.  If you only need one at that price,  it's no big loss.  If you need a few of them, shop around.   It's almost always cheaper to buy from the local metal supplier rather than through a middle man.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:goat!Post your area that you are at, you don't have to give your full address, just a general area like Atlanta Ga, Milwaukee WI or Stinky feet Texas or something and someone on here might be able to point you to a discount supplier in your general area! For example, the discount supplier I use sells everything by the pound, his price right now is $0.30 a pound, that 1x1x1/8 20' would weigh about 25 pounds x 0.30 = $7.50#1. Reply:Why dont you call the steel yards in your area and find out what it costs?Have we all gone mad?
Reply:As of two hours ago the 4X8 steel plate is $62 which is up from $55 about a month ago.
Reply:It seems to follow fuel prices, but with a slight lag.
Reply:My question was too vague. I just would like some prices on materials that you people of this forum are paying. I like to see the prices thrown out there to see what kind of varying prices is in the steel market. It does seem to be like gas prices. I would like to see prices stay more level across the board.
Reply:You will never see that!As the price in my area will not be at a premium compared to areas where there are a lot of steel being used.In other words, the local market demand will dictate the going rate, and the demand varies from place to place so the price will too!#1. Reply:Plus, things like local rents, insurance, labor, and other costs of doing business.  Even then, you're going to see a lot of variety.  Different businesses are going to have different goals.  Does the supplier actually want to be making small sales?  I was pricing out 20' lengths of 1"x1" 16 ga square tubing a couple of months back, and the range between local suppliers was from $6.00 to $17.20 a piece.  This is in Los Angeles, and I was only buying a dozen pieces.
