Hello, I am not a professional welder by any stretch of the imagination. A friend came to me to see the best way to weld a Unistrut tube (P9200) smack in the middle of a A36 10 x 10 x 5/8 PL @ 90 degrees. Can you please tell me the best way and why?Best regards

Reply:It is definitely going to a shop. Because it seems like a complicated issue I would like to make sure it is done right. No welding procedure was issued for this job so I cannot tell if what a shop whants to do is right.Best regards
Reply:See this link to Unistrut components.http://www.unistrut.com/Browse/cat_pg.php?P=S00_FittingI did not study this in detail, but you may want to consider a bolted on mounting bracket that would allow removal of the unistrut.

However, the engineer was concerned with deflection since it is hanging upside down with quite a load downward, hence the reason that it was upgraded. I asked him why he went to 5/8 instead of 1/2 he used in similar situation on other parts of the project and he actually said that, "He felt like 5/8" that morning".Thanks for your response
Reply:I have to laugh to think anyone would equate critical strength with the use of a unistrut. It is used for holding/supporting electrical conduit and piping. Matching it to a half inch plate never mind a 5/8th plate just does not make any sense. It is like using a large semi to transport a bag of feathers across the continent. You can do it but Why??? It sounds like bad design. Welding is not like laying out a bead of caulking from a tube. Oh yes if you have not noticed it is galvanized also.... another can of worms.

Reply:Unistrut makes their own post/hanging mounts. Welded BTW. A lot lighter plate than 5/8ths". Probably pricey. I'm with lotech on this one. It better not be too dern structural, not as an individual piece anyway. Not 5/8th" plate worth of structural. |
