When mig welding 1 1/4" steel in a butt weld situation, How do you clamp? I'm making a square frame and butt welding the four pieces together with a support right in the middle. I am using magnets to hold the pieces while I tack, but is there a clamp made that i can clamp the hole structure together (kinda dry fit) and then tack ? My main problem is where the center support T's to the frame. This is a rather large frame so c clamps are not an option, i don't think.  Thanks in advance for the help.
Reply:Presuming that what you are trying to do is fit the pieces to make a flat surface, the easiest thing to do is weld a hunk of scrap on that you can clamp to, tack up the part, and cut the scrap off.
Reply:Angle iron.  Use it on the corners to clamp to.
