I am going to take a 2G, 3G ceramic backing fluxcore test. I welded with the tape for years in shipyard back in the late 90's all the time welding butts. Haven't done it in quite a while. Any refresher suggestions. I know the basic start the puddle at the side then just stay in the puddle in the middle of the tape. Run the 2G hot, and the 3G at about 200 amps and 28 volts, with the wire speed on about 2.5. Is this correct. Going to drive over a hundred miles Friday to test. Job will pay 19 hr, 110.00 day per diem. not a bad gig. 2 yr. contract. Any refresher remarks will be REALLY WELCOMED.
Reply:without knowing what wire you trying to do it with its hart to say.    Wire feed doesn't really care about amps as much as Volts and IPM (Inches of wire per min) on the wire speeds. But that's my S.O.P.for doing a ceramic backed FCAW full pen.   I usually like to clamp a piece of steel BEHIND the taped down ceramic to keep everything firmly in place.   after you burn in a root and do a decent hot pass its no longer needed.   Depends on what the WPS allows if it calls for Carbon-arc gouging or grinding.  either way don't be shy.  GO all the way down to the best metal you can and clean the heck out of it and weld up a cover.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:That a great idea if they'll let me do it. I will be using FCAW. It simple really. Should be even easier than an open root test. Thanks I appreciate it.
Reply:Passed the test. I thought is a  flat and vert but it was a horizontal and vert. Nothing to it. Can go to work in Pitts in a week. not the highest pay at 19hr 110.00 day per diem but its better than I'm making now.
Reply:Great!  Just Horizontal and Vertical, no Overhead??  Too easy!MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Glad to hear they went easy on you.Truth be told i have more problems with the V-up than the overhead.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I'm the opposite.  I love vert-up.  Overhead sucks.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Yep the horizontal was kinda horizontal overhead. It was a flat plate on top with a bevelled bottom plate. 1/4 gap. Long as the tape was welded correctly the filler was not prob. bend test, no x ray
Reply:Sounds like a horizontal single bevel butt joint.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:On the overheads are just upside down flats.  IF you have good slag coverage on your flats then you got no problems with the overheads.I don't stick weld though. Just Mig, Tig, and FCAW.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:I am taking the same test on Tuesday.  I practiced at a local shop a little, but i was having trouble with my horizontal.  ANy tips?  The weld on the back was rounded, but more of the weld was on the bottom and the top was undercut.
Reply:Just stay in the puddle. Slow wire feed, moving up and down, slowing at the top, slowing at the bottom for the tie in. It isn't hard but you have to pay attention to making sure you keep your welds tying in on the root pass. Run the machine at about 22 to 23 vlts.  Good luck
Reply:Did they let you arc gouge or grind the weld on the back?
Reply:what's the diference in flat and horisontal?
Reply:Flat is where the plate is laid flat on the table to weld and horizontal is where the plate is in a vertical position but the plates are welded together horizontal.
Reply:what?
Reply:Welding Positionshttp://www.weldingengineer.com/Welding%20Position.htm
Reply:The g stands for groove weld and the F stands for Fillet weld.  Most of the time when someone says they are taking a horizontal test, it is the 2g.  The flat one is the 1G.  The 1f, 2f, 3f are fillet welds on t plates.
