whats on A500 steel?

I made a headache rack for a pickup out of 1 1/2" A500 square box.i never got pictures yet, but i will as it is a good design (that i copied)the guy was complaining that the linex type bedliner stuff that he was going to brush on wasnt sticking. I told him ti rub it down with acetone.the tube was very dirty. you just had to touch a bit and you hands were black all over.What would have been on it?other steel that i got just had mill scale and was dry.G
Reply:oil.  I have seen the guys at the local steel supplier spray down stacks of steel with anything from diesel to water soluable cutting fluid to keep it from rusting while it sat.My name's not Jim....

Reply:its a oil or fish emulsion.   some of the import tube they ship over now  is horrible!  i spent a couple hours last week cleaning that off the windshield of my flat bed after sliding 04 piece of square tube off the rack.I Use purple power cleaner in a pump up spray bottle and rinse with the garden hose.Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
Reply:thanks for the responses guy'si use that purple power cleaner on my dirtbike. it really moves the sh1t.the tubes said made in canada(forgot to mention that)the painter got the steel wiped down and coated them real nice. I'll get pictures soon....honest.G
