welding SS to regular steel, Is it possible?

Is it possible to weld stainless steel to 1/4" cold rolled steel? If so what would be the best method? No TIG-ing, I'm not good enough yet.... MIG? what wire? Also, how does one tell what grade of SS they have, I can  not tell by the spark test, all them sparks look the same to me.....I have several very large SS sinks that i got from a bakery. What grade do you think they would be???
Reply:i can usually ball park the grade by the color of the metal. spark test is hard imo. welding SS to steel can be done. but getting it not to crack is the problem. i have welding dissimilar metals qutie often and i am unsure if my technique is the proper but it seems to work. i use TIG i know you say you arent good enough but thats just what 90% of my experience is in. throw down a nice bead of SS if its your base metal. then cover it with a silica bronze weld. seems to work for me.

Reply:Not a problem with welding s/s to steel.Stick weld it (309 or 310), does the sinks have any signs of rust spots??

Reply:I will be welding some home made SS fenders to my trailer....Not critical but i would hate to have them fall off at 70 mph. in the middle lane of Hwy 494......I will try to get my TIG squared away, won't hurt to experiment with my MIG either..
Reply:i forgot about stick welding. i welded alot of stainless HEPA filters to galv steel stands with 309 stick rod.
