What is the max weave for Aws d1.1 using 1/8" 7018 and FCAW .045 wire hearing a lot of different widths , 1 1/2 times , 3 times etc not sure how it could be 1 1/2 that dont seam like much of a weave to meNo job is done until the paperwork is done.
Reply:Hello AMAC, you are probably going to receive a host of comments on this one. I believe that D1.1 doesn't limit the width of a weave, instead they use terminology that goes something like this: the bead width will be limited to a size that doesn't allow deposited weld metal to be run over solidified slag or something to that effect. I have followed various threads where this exact question has been asked and I believe that what I included above somewhat follows what is listed in the code. As I remember additionally ASME does have some sort of width limitation based on electrode diameters but similarly they have addendums that ony impose those limitations in certain cases and not as a blanket statement. There are certainly folks out there who can probably cite the exact sections and such where these items are listed so hopefully they will chime in. Best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:AWS I believe doesn't limit the width that a weave can be. But there are certian tables that limit the number of layers of weld metal that you must put down. Maybe someone who has their code book handy can chime on on the part of the code that talks about split layers. --Gol'
Reply:Thank you for the input , I will look into this more this weekend and post what i find. I did learn today that ASME WPQ when you qualify a welder to a F# he is qualified to other  WPS with the same F# electrode as long as essential variables are not exceeded. No job is done until the paperwork is done.
Reply:AWS Limits bead width for welding procedures that are prequalified in Table 3.7 . The Variable is "Maximum Single Pass Layer Width". For SMAW there is no limit given. For FCAW Max is 5/8" for all positions except vertical which is 1".For Procedures that are qualified by testing AND have to meet impact requirements, the only thing addressed is changing from a stringer to weave. The code does not address the width of the weave. Heat input which is affected my travel speed is often the concern with wide beads.Gerald Austinwww.weldingdata.com
