I need a welder for lots of various automotive things. I cant say I will ever use it for anything more structural then frame welding. That will not happen often. Most stuff I need is light duty like exhaust pipe, or a manual transmission shifter lever, body mounts, etc. Nothing to hard there.I would love a 220v welder but I need the convenience of a 110v welder ( no compromise). Are there any welders out there that you can change ? Wire up a cord for 110 or 220. I have a plasma cutter that can do that.Specifically I was looking at the Lincoln 180C welder (the continuous one, not the tap welder) because it claims to weld really thick stuff for a 110 (dont specifically remember) but it should weld truck frame no problem right? So I was wondering if that is the one to go for me, or if there are alternatives that will do the same, but maybe cheaper. I was told a Hobart Handler 140 can do the same but have not looked into this yet because I have always liked Lincolns.Oh yeah I forgot to mention it needs to be flux core compatible, as well as solid core and a tank.

Reply:The Lincoln 180C is not a 110v welder -- it's 220.The Millermatic 211 is pretty much the only MIG/flux machine that is both 110/220.  It's selling well enough that there will no doubt be more like it from other manufacturers before too long.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:Don't forget the DVI2 that''s a dual 110/220  as well(something I'm saving for but wouldn't care to get a 210 if one was cheap enough my way,$500 anyone? Reply:For mig, the Millermatic 211 already mentioned would be my choice for a semi-portable dual-voltage machine for the kind of work you want to do.  My friend has one and brings it along on jobs we do together and it is a very good little machine.  I have welded with it and was impressed.  The arc is similar to my Millermatic 175 and works well on both solid wire and gas and fluxcore.   It is a very good, much lower cost alternative to a Passport or Passport Plus.   I would buy one myself if I was looking for an inexpensive dual voltage mig for shop and mobile use. That said, I would also look at a Maxstar 150STL/STH or 200SD for tig/stick welding, if you're interested in expanding beyond mig and using those processes. The Lincoln mig 180C is 220-volt-only.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
