hello i had a quesiton about my hobart diesel welding machine i have attached a photo but you can also see an uncompressed photo at this urlhttp://zandiconstruction.com/images/...ng-machine.JPGessentially my question is that i am using 1/8inch welding rods...as far as the machine and what it is supposed to be set on once i crank it up is maybe put it on 80/145 and put the switch on the left on ac rod side "s" 6013 6011 put the idle switch on h i assume that is highput the ground clamp on the pieace of metal, put a welding rod in the welding clamp put my gloves and mask on and start welding away...well that is in a straight line holding the welding rod an 1/8 inch away from the metal i am weldingone last thing if i am welding something on a tractor and i put the ground clamp on the bumper and start welding will i mess up the electronic components in the tractor???thanks to whoever replies to this i know it is a hand full but i would really apprieciate it!!!god bless america!by the way (this will be my last additon to this post) when it says 80% duty cycle does that mean 80% or 10 miniutes of welding would be 8 miniutes welding and 2 miniutes not welding so the motor can cool down? Reply:It looks like you are changing to straight for 6011 and 6013. Why? My welder never gets off reverse unless I am tigging or some special stuff.
Reply:Yes, duty cycle 80% means 10 minutes welding, 2 minutes cooling. You can use those 6011 and 6013 rods on DC too.  They weld very nice on DC+.  I don't use AC for stick welding at all unless I'm fighting with arc blow and can't solve it by moving the ground or welding in the other direction. It is best to place your ground clamp as close to the work as possible and do not place it on the other side of a bearing either.Sounds like you have the operation of your machine controls down fine.We need alot more God in America these days...MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Often it's recommend that you disconnect the battery on the vehicle you plan to weld on. this should keep the loop open and help protect the electrical components. That said, I've yet to hear of someone frying things that are some distance from whats being welded with the battery still connected. As said try and keep the ground as close as possible to what you want to weld. This keeps the electrical path clear from other items. If you have to weld in proximity to electrical components, take a few basic precautions such as disconnecting the battery, or removing or unplugging the components. If the disk is attached like most implements I've seen, I doubt you'd get a good connection thru the hitch between the tractor and the disk. Usually those are so full of rust, paint, or grease that you just wouldn't make a circuit if you hooked the ground to the tractor and tried to weld for some dumb reason. You could always go to the trouble to drop the disk, but I wouldn't..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I think you'll be fine, but you can easily disconnect the battery to be sure.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:why does a diesel welder have a choke?plenty tough and union made.
Reply:I believe 80% duty cycle is 10 minutes total, 8 welding, 2 cooling. Diesel does not have a choke and usually has a pre-heat. Better check your fuel, if you have spark plugs it's a gas job."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400

Reply:Hi all,I thought the duty cycle refers to the minutes of welding time in relation to cooling time, based on 10 minutes=100%..  If I'm right, 80% means 8 minutes of welding, 10 minutes of cooling.  20% duty cycle would be two minutes of welding time, 10 minutes of cooling time, etc. Therefore a 100% duty cycle means you can weld 10 minutes continuously without any cooling time. What do you think?Tony
