I would like to make a smaller (AWG) extension cord for the Lincoln Pro 180 I just got.I have been useing the one for my 225 lincoln, its a 6-3 50 amp RV cord 30 ft and a pain to lug around.I only need about 30 ft of cord can I use a smaller gauge wire and if so what size. The guy I bought the welder from had a 10-2 gauge wire, seems a little small to me.

Reply:Your duty cycle rating is what you are allowed to size your wiring for if you want to be 'code like' but no more than minimum. Cords would fall into the same category if you'd like. Your machine will be something like 30% duty cycle at 130 amps output using 20 amps input. That right there indicates that a smaller wire size than a 30 amp continuous duty circuit would require. But on with using the NEC's chart 630.11(A) you could also derate the amp requirements by a factor of .55 for the 30% duty cycle. So 20 amps times .55 equals a dern small cord. A 12 awg would be fine for a short 30 footer and that machine only. Personally I still like the heavier 10 awg myself. That's just me.
Reply:OK a 10-2 cord sounds good to me.It makes my 6-2 cord seem like excessive overkill, guess i'll need to get a new breaker to (30 AMP) thanks for the info guys.I said guys i'm from Alabama I meant to say thank Yall.lol

Reply:HF has an AWG 10-2 w/gnd extension cord for about $34, less if you have a 20% off .  Cut the ends off and you have a nice cable cheaper than I have been able to find bare cable.  Only problem is I have not been able to cut off the nice three outlet end or plug...kind of like neutering a nice tool.  Don't know if cover is as good as service cord.
Reply:I bought 30 ft of 10-2 soow from home depot 1.40 per foot works great.I started building a cart wish I would have got the 10-3 instead would have been perfect for adding a 110 outlet on my cart. Oh well live an learn.
