My customer wants to have brass "leaves" attached to a "branch" made of plain old copper tubing like that from Home Depot.I have tried to braze some brass rods (stems) using oxy/acetylene and common flux coated bronze brazing rod but can't get the copper pipe to even wet or tin. Silver soldering works but I am baffled that I can't even get the copper pipe to tin using bronze rod. I have cleaned the surface with an unused flap disk and acetone. Has anyone had success using plain old flux coated brazing rods to join copper pipes? Is it a matter of heat transfer or just incompatibility of the bronze and copper?Thank you for any insights and suggestions.Gil
Reply:Forget the coated brazing rod. Use copper-phos rod, it wets out on copper MUCH better. Doesn't actually need to have the silver in it (sil-phos), but that's ok too. No flux necessary on the copper side, and with a swirl torch (instead of oxy-acetylene), the flame is reducing enough to not need flux on the brass side.
Reply:Thanks. I'll give that a try and let you know how it works out.Regards,Gil |
