I need to build a gate 22' long by 4' high used to keep cars out of a lot at night. I have never built one this long and am worried about sagging. My idea was to use a truss design for strength since looks dont matter. I'm going to use 11/4" sq tubing thru out with 1/8 material on the outside vertical and the bottom horizontal rail and 16 ga else where to keep weight down what do yall think? thanks in advance
Reply:Steve,Can you use rectangle tube instead of square for the top rail? I have some 4"x 1 1/2" x 1/8" that is very rigid. How about having the gate open in the middle so that the sections are only 10' each?Eric
Reply:Will it be a swing gate or roller? Swingers will need to be light and as short as possible to limit wearing out the hinges and or operators. For rollers, just add another set of rollers on the bottom. Three would be fine for a tracked gate.
Reply:yes i can use rectangle. thats a good idea thanks. this is a swing gate due to space limitations one side has to be 22' and the other will be 15'. I just wasnt sure about the 22' section thats pretty long ill use the biggest hinges i can get . i just wanted the best design so to prevent a sag. thanks for your help
Reply:The Blacksmith hinges at Triple S are good stuff. They have a zerk and are weldable.
Reply:Even on a swing gate you could weld a wheel in the middle.Bruce
Reply:thanks i was thinking of that there is a slight increase in elevation in the swing area. its pretty slight, i havnt measured it yet but i could mount the wheel on a spring if its not too steep a slope.thanks
Reply:SteveMaybe this would help.?http://www.sss-steel.com/shopping/ts...pring%20rollerDon
Reply:not sure if you found your solution i would make the main support post the gate hangs on a bit longer so i could use a cable and a swivel with a turn buckle so i could ajust for sag or i would use a wheel on the end hope this helps have fun buildin

Reply:Here's another angle. The drop rods are inch and a half round bar. Attached Imageslife is good
Reply:This one was a real bugger bear. I tried ash, oak, bois d arc rods but nothing would make that cedar stick, not even cedar. Then an old weldor came by and suggested willow. It worked as you can see. Attached Imageslife is good |
