HI guys, Its been a long time since ive posted a question on hear, Ive been out of the business for about 6 months. Anyway im starting a job next week at a company that manufactures aluminum aerial delivery platforms for military cargo planes. They originally only did the machining for these platforms and outsources the welding to another company, but have decided to start doing the welding in house. The processes they selected were GMAW-P and GTAW. They purchaced a MM 305P with the AlumiPro torch and a Dynasty 350. I have been welding for about 5 years, 2 in school and 3 in the aeropace industry. I have done alot of MIG welding on mild steel, but never with GMAW-P and no aluminum. I have however done lots of aluminum with TIG, and am quite proficient with it. The platform im going to be welding is basically a fancy 50x50 metal pallet with brackets for collapsable side and top panels and brackets to attach to parachutes. The side panels are constructed of 1"x1"x1/8 6061-t6 tubing with a sheet rivited on to it. All the tubing is to be TIG welded. Due to production requirments they chose to use the GMAW-P process for the base of the platform as thats where the majority of the welding is. The pieces that make up the platform are 1/4" thick 6061-t6 plate prepped with a 45 degree chamfer to a 1/8" root face to be butt welded together. The final product calls for the welds to be flushed to the parent metal. I want to know if there is anyone on here that has experiance making welds like this with this machine, because like I said I dont and Im going to have to pass an AWS D17.1 plate test with this process. I was told I was goin to have to use the push technique instead of the pull technique. I was wondering if anyone had advice on parameters and things of that nature. The filler material is going to be 5356. Thank You for any advice you can provide, Chris
