Hi, new to this site, and just a home garage welder. I have a mig welder, and was welding up a broken part on my treadmill, got it done and it has'nt worked right since. I was wondering if I did something to the motor (DC motor) It will run for like 1.5 minutes, with me on it, then slow to a stop. any ideas? thanks
Reply:could you have introduced a bind so the motor is over heating??? or done something to the fan on the motor?-- fredLincoln 180C MIG

Reply:Where did you have your ground clamp when you welded it?  If you had it clamped so the weld power went through the motor somehow, that could fry something...MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:A photo of your meter will help. Show how it’s setup. That 17 amps, you could be reading 17 volts.Does the motor turn freely by hand, no binds?DC motor = DC power supply. The power supply may be shutting down because it's overloaded.Last edited by transit; 11-09-2009 at 10:09 AM.

Reply:Wish you had a closer pic of the selector face. Ok, the dial selects VOLTS or AMPS. The scale is 2 x 100, 2 x 10, 2 x 1, 2 x 0.100.This meter will NOT measure 17 amps, at best it may go to 2 amps, may be 10 at the most. Meter 101:Using a 1-1/2 volt battery, set the meter to DC VOLTS and start at the 200 volt setting, place the RED probe on the button of the battery and the Black probe on the opposite end of the battery, you should see 1 on the display.Turn the selector one step down to 20 and you should see, 1.5 volts.Turn the selector one step down to 2 and you should see, 1.544 volts.Turn the selector one step down to 0.200 and you should see, ----volts, meaning that the reading is off scale. You are trying to measure a voltage larger than the scale will allow. The trick is to set the scale so what you are measuring fits within the selected range. If you set the meter to DC VOLTS and start at the 200 volt setting, place the RED probe on the Red motor terminal and the BLACK probe on the Blue motor terminal. You will/should read, say 17 volts.Turn the selector one step down to 20 and you should see, 17.20 volts, trying to keep the reading within the selected scale.Measuring current is a different setup than measuring voltage. Measuring voltage, the meter leads are connected ACROSS the motor, RED on Red, BLACK no Blue with the selector on the DC Voltage scales.Measuring current, the RED PROBE is connected to the Red wire that has been removed from the motor and the BLACK PROBE is connected to the terminal that the Red wire was removed from. Now for the tricky part, determining where to set the selector for the Amps scale. Again you want to start on a high scale. I would suspect that the largest value scale is 2 amps. If you try to measure a larger current than the meter can’t handle you will most likely blow the fuse in the meter. Some meters will read to 2 amps and then you must move one of the probes to another connection that will allow for higher current, say 10 amps. A clear close up of the meter face to see the scales and connections would help. Also, what is the tag on the motor indicate, any values for current and voltage?
