Cylinder question

I was given 2 big co2 tanks and would like to have one filled with argon and the other with tri-mix. Are the tanks compatible? they are about the same size as my oxy bottles, I had 1 oxy bottle valve changed and filled with 75/25 mix and the lws just told me ill have to wait to have it filled for now on since he dont carry owner bottles that big of the mix. Reply:At the LWS I work at we won't take a cylinder that's been in Co2 service and convert it to Argon, as most of our 50# Co2 cylinders are our older stock, when a cylinder has been in Co2 service for a long time, the liquid that's at the bottom tends to weaken the cylinder walls, that's why the majority of cylinders that fail a hydro test were in Co2 service. Co2 is also a lower pressure gas, as a full cylinder will usually be between 700-800 psi, (but remember it's filled by pounds and not pressure) while a full Argon or Oxgen cylinder will be filled to 2,200 to 2,400 psi, depending upon the size of the cylinder. I don't understand why some LWS companies are so anal about not swapping a cylinder for a cylinder, and they want to give you your cylinder back, the way we look at it is if a guy comes in and wants to swap a cylinder for another one of a different mix, and if his cylinder is in good shape, and the retest is up to date, then what's the difference? If the guy happened to buy the cylinder from us, and has his title, and want's to upgrade to a larger cylinder, we give him his full original purchase price he paid towards the next cylinder.
