tack with gas rod then TIG?

Hello,Can I tack 2 pieces of thin wall steel tubing with a gas rod using oxy/acet then have a TIG welder do the whole joint? Will the slightly different filler metals interfere?Thanks

Reply:Mild steel has a tensile strength of about 36k. O/A rod comes in 45k, and 60k. TIG rod is 70k. Yes you can TIG over O/A tacks. Reply:Thanks guys. So I might as well use a TIG rod with my O/A to tack it?I'm doing this because I dont know how to TIG (but do know how to use O/A), and I want the nice clean TIG look on my project. So I wanted to see if I could tack it all together then have a pro TIG it up.
Reply:I'm interested to see if the TIG has any problems with porosity, oxidation, or irregular appearance due to the OA tacks.

Reply:It is structural... A bicycle frame I am going to make. It is thin wall chromoly.I don't have the skill to do a full clean O/A weld.Will the O/A tack work followed by TIG?Any ideas of how I can do this?

Reply:If you do three tacks at 120*, then the TIG guy can do three more tacks between yours. Now he can weld from his known good tack, toward the unknown O/A tack. Reply:just practice and get your chops up.  I just started welding a month ago, i know my welds a fugly as sin, but its not gonna get better if practice doesn't happen.
Reply:A possibility is to braze it with a high strength nickle brazing rod.That'll mess with the tubing grain structure less .Brazing is traditional for bike frames
Reply:I interchange between O/A and tig on home projects all the time. never had a problem as long as you clean it befor doing the tig. Though I've never welded chomoly befor, I don't think having a few specks of metal with 45k tensil streangth under a weld with 70k tensile will make much difference on a bike frame. If you want, you could switch to tig rod for the O/A or you could ask the tigger to use your O/A rod when welding the frame. Though I think you should practice your welding so you can do it yourself. Like I said, I do tig and O/A. If you can do O/A, learning tig shouldn't be to difficult for you.
