I have mostly *iller stuff in my shop, but do have a little Lincoln Weldpak 100 (or also called an SP85) for the light stuff and the thing is driving me nuts. The problem is that the feed is not consitent and it make horrible welds....spattery, BIRD POOP or holes because the wire stops and then goes so often. The motor runs smoothly and consistently when the trigger is activated and I have checked the drive roll alignment VERY carefully, cleaned everything, replaced the inlet and outlet guides, changed liners, changed wires sizes (and other required stuff, of course) to check if the size was a problem, checked the contact tips, carefully checked roll friction, ETC, ETC..with no luck. Has anyone ever worn out the drive roll on one of these things? I am thinking that maybe THAT is the problem, though some people say that the machine works a lot better with 8" rolls rather than the 4" ones. When I press the trigger and watch the drive roll, it seems the wire moves while in contact with about 1/4 to one half of the roll, but not the other half. Would even a lightly worn drive roll ( so slightly that you can't see it, even with a magnifyin glass) give this problem? Anyone had this? I called Lincoln this morning and they said that "maybe" it was the gun that was bad, but the only way to find that out is to spend over 100 bucks on a new one, so I'll throw the danged thing in the river before I try THAT! Anyway, I think they were just hoping to sell me a new one!! LOL! They also claimed that their own brand of wire would work SO MUCH better!! Anyone got any thoughts on that??Last edited by dondlhmn; 11-30-2009 at 03:01 PM.Reason: corrections and additions
Reply:Are you running solid wire for fluxcore?Do you have the polarity set correctly for the wire type?Solid wire runs torch positive.  Fluxcore wire runs torch negative.Yes it is possible for a worn out drive roll to cause havoc with the feeding and no they don't necessarily look worn when they are.  Drive rolls are cheap and easily available at the local weld supply, if you want to try a new one.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:I have had one for about8 or 9 years and have run several big rolls of wire thru it and never had a problems. I put plain wire once in mine and once I realize it put fluxcore wire in it and ran with no problems. Check all the tenison connection on the wire roller.
Reply:Desert rider...No, I am not running solid wire for flux core...they are different and you can't run one for the other. Yep, polarity was one if the first things I checked. You do have the polarities correct for the two types of wire. (so it seems that you know they can't be run one for the other)I tried 4 out of 5 welding supply places and none of them had the drive roll I needed, but a repair place that does Lincoln stuff here in Reno had one....I bought it and gave it a try...the new drive roll seems to have fixed the problem. It supplies wire without a hitch now....so far....Don J
Reply:I have machines that I run both solid wire and fluxcore in the same machine, is why I asked.  Yes, I do know how they are run.Glad the drive roll fixed the problem for you.  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
