I have a 4' X 8' sheet of 1/2" plate that I'm going to use for a table and I am wanting some advice about the support structure for the top.I am going to make a rectangle out of .125 square tubing with two supports running lengthwise. I figured that running the supports lengthwise would give me more sag support over the 8' foot length than running them from side to side but I don't know that for a fact. It just seems that If I run the supports side to side then the only sag support for the 8' length that I have is on the 2 outer pieces of the rectangle.I was planning on using .125 2"X2" square tubing because I have several 20' pieces on hand, but I am not sure if the 2X2 is big enough to support that kind of weight (the top weighs 654 pounds) and prevent sagging especially if I add another 1000 pounds to the top (an engine) when working on something. Do you think that I should go with 3X3X .125", or even .250.If I decide to go with a 3/4" top will the 3X3 be enough and if so what gauge?
