I'm welding rails onto galvanize posts. Might there be a way to shield myself from the galvanize smoke with a box fan. I'm going to tow a small trailer with a lawn tractor. I will tack all rails into place, then come back and weld them. This is the trailer. http://www.enichesoftware.com/solar/..._generater.wmvVernLast edited by Vern2; 11-19-2009 at 10:10 AM.

Reply:Grind the galvanized area, wear a respirator, and leave the box fan off unless you want to lose your shielding coverage and get porosity.

Reply:You can run the fan, just don't blow it on high directly at the weld.Best thing to do is pick up a 3M respirator mask and the pink filters and wear it.  Your local welding supply or construction supply should have these. You'll waste alot of time if you grind off the galvanized before welding and you'll still have to deal with the smoke and fumes, as well as losing your rust protection once you grind it off.   The respirator mask will protect you, wear it.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:It will be a shield gas problem unless he is using flux core wire or stick. Stay away from the smoke and he will be fine.
Reply:I agree a mask is #1 way to go. Some people obviously are more concerned than others. I prefer to play it safe myself. If you use a fan I have had better sucess using a pull, IE the fan sucking and blowing the smoke away from you, This is less likely so screw with your shielding gas. Push IE blowing air on the project seems more likely to disturb the shielding gas.If I'm welding a couple galvy washers or something I'll try and hold my breath or stay away from the smoke but if you are doing much more than that I'd spend the time and money to ensure your safety.

SP175 plus, Fluxcore .030. http://www.enichesoftware.com/solar/..._generater.wmvIf it is simple as pulling the smoke away that would be great. There is 100 posts and 2.5k feet of pipe, 21' long pipe. The first round is tack it all together, next weld it. No pipe welding, the pile slides together. I only have to weld it to the post. Where the pipe meets the post, there is a crack, at that point I have to weld. The crack (weld) is out of the way of the fan, behind the rail.VernLast edited by Vern2; 11-23-2009 at 11:06 AM.
Reply:Vern2, here is what I use.Innershield NR-211-MP, 3M respirator with 2097 filter (fits nicely under my helmet), and a 24" fan.In my opinion, just the fan or just the respirator is not enough. If you can smell it, its getting in your lungs.I do not grind off the galv.I've been welding galvanized gates like this every work day for 5 years and I'm happy with my setup.btw I work in a warehouse and I keep the doors open whenever I'm welding.Just because your welding outside doesn't mean the wind is blowing the smoke away, often it just blows it up your mask and hangs there till you suck it in.

Reply:Okay, I did a test.I set a box fan about 4 feet from a galvanize pipe I was running beads on, in a vice. Pipe was 1 7/8 .065. Using SP135 plus, c25 turned up to 20 and .025 wire. The fan was directed right at the pipe, no abstractions, bead in plane view.1) turned fan on low. It moved the smoke away with no porous bead.2) turned fan on med. It moved the smoke away still no porous bead.3) turned fan on high. It moved the smoke out the door and still no porous bead.To me, I'm going to use a fan directed at my welding bead location. This is outside on a fence line.Vern

Reply:I work at a company that has had any where from 17 to 27 weldors welding galvanized pipe and tubing. So far nobody has gotten sick, disabled or died from the fumes. Some have air hoods, sometimes some will wear a mask if they're welding the heavy galv 4"pipe, some just have a pedestal fan blowing over there head, but most just weld it. They have had people come in and take air samples and it has always passed. Like broccoli said your going to be outside so after 16 days of thinking about it, put a mask on and just weld it. The splatter and popping should be worse than the smoke .Last edited by afab; 12-04-2009 at 08:34 PM.

Reply:I would wear the mask, you will lose money if you get sick and cannot finish the job on time.
Reply:Thanks for all the info. You guys are great! Just got the shop press dye built. It looks like an elephant foot. Does a great job, pressing 2 inches of end of pipe very even. Used 1/4" plate, 2" square, double 1/4" plate on botton. 1" square hole, out of 1/4" plate, on top to fit 1" ram (try to follow that ptcture). Like I say have to squeeze about 50 ends. Each end has to be fit and cut before I press it, in threes. I'm adding 3 rails to the top rail. So I can't do them all at once. It cost me about $2 a squeeze, but I got a free shop press. Ha! There's about 15 pumps to a press. Not to bad. HF does have 12 ton air over hyd bottle jack $66. Its a direct replacement if I get it. But don't have much use for press after fence project. Adjusted rail jig tonight, will check how level 21' rails looks tomorrow. I could fit, cut, press all at once with a lowboy trailer I have, with 6.2k generator running chop saw, plazma, air compressor, welder, grander an a couple fans. I might look like the circus came to town. Ha! It will only be 100 yards back to the shop to get the next set of rails ready to weld up. I think a lawn tractor and a 15 cubic foot trailer will be a little more practical. I only have to fit pipe when I come to a gate, corner, or end post. So I'll have a big pile(12) pipe on pallet forks with the TC33DA New Hollen tractor. I'll only have to go to the shop when I have to fit, cut and press pipe.Had a new lawn guy today, first time I ever had one. He needed trailer work, I needed lawn work. Sounds like a deal. My front yard is 150 by 60 Turn drive on conner lot. All desert with lot of cutting back on things this time of year. City provides bulk trash pickup. So I'm just helping out.Game is almost on.VernLast edited by Vern2; 12-05-2009 at 10:24 PM.
