hi i'm a new- be here, anyway i would like to weld some 4130 chromoly tube for an atv frame and parts. a local welder said i will have to stress relieve any thing i use the 4130 on. i'm not sure what he's talking about? ( plus, i'm not sure he does eather) i do have a tig mach. allso can 4130 be welded with hard wire? thanks

Reply:You have to match the filler metal to the parent material. Stress realieving is very important with chromoly. I do alot of high pressure chromoly piping in our generating station. I go by strict procedures as super heated steam is extremely dangerous. For instance i just finished a 4" sch 160 auxillery steam line that was xrayed, followed by a 14hr post weld heat treatment, we wrap the pipe in heat blankets with temperature probes and bring the temp up 200* per hour to 1350* where it "soaks" for 1 hour, then brought down 200* an hour back to 0. What i would do since all your using is tubing reheat the joint with a torch once your finished and wrap it in an heat blanket for slow cooling. The reason for doing this is that chromoly is prone to stress cracking if procedures are not closely followed.

Reply:thanks for the replys. i'm just geting my ducks in a row here. i want to build an atv frame and suspention for a sand dune runner. this is a father and two sons project so i need to probably build 3. the main thing i need to know is if we can do this with average tools nothing exotic. we have a fairly equiped shop. i work for a ocean going tug and barge co. and run the parts and warhouse dept.. there several guys that work here know how to tig weld, i'm just in the learning stage. i do a lot of sheet metal welding with hard wire in my small body shop at night mostly street rods or resto work.anyway thanks agin i'm sure you will here more from me. this seems like a good forum

Reply:Originally Posted by RojodiabloYou should just use er70-s2 filler, unless you intend to heat treat the frame afterwards. Almost every offroad truck ever built is done this way, the mild steel filler keeps the welds from coming too brittle and reduces cracking. If you are going all out with the 4130, and heat treating the frame, etc??? Use 4130 filler. But for the average frame job like this, I am all about the using mild steel filler material. I don't crack tubes, They hold up very very well.
