Hi, i have oxy acet setup,Im using comet 3 equipment, welding steel, 0.9mm, size 8 tip, as soon as the metal gets red hot (melting point), the oxy keeps popping, bang bang and keeps blowing holes, if you put the pressure up, it stops, but you cant weld like that because its too hot. What is wrong? Checked for leaks and no problems, put it in a big bucket of water. Thanks
Reply:not familiar with comet 3..assume the tip is the right size for the 0.9mm..is the tip clean? im thinking for 0.9mm yoyu want very little pressure..btw red is not melting point..that willcome right after yellow-white..sorry   couldnt help m,ore..is the regulator working ok?
Reply:If it pops, then you may be getting the inner cone too close to the metal.  This will do that.  Or you are overheating the metal. On most O/A setups for welding, your size tip is roughly equivalent of the pounds of pressure that you should run to match the requirement of the tip.  Some torches suggest otherwise, but it is the old school method.  Don't attempt to control your gas flow much with your torch valves. Use the regulator.  #8 is quite large and good for much thicker metals, if it follows many of the standard mfgr's sizes or at least in the ballpark.  Step down to a # 5 or smaller if you aren't trying to weld thick plate.Last edited by lugweld; 12-06-2009 at 11:54 AM.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
