Well, it's winter, and the lab isn't exactly a toasty place. What do guys usually wear 'round this time of year?I was freezing yesterday, so I went and put on a long-sleeve shirt underneath my work shirt today... though, it's 90% cotton 10% polyester, and that's in the back of my head. I know sparks will probably not get through my leathers and my work shirt, but... Murphy's law, right....What brands or products are "safe"?On Monday the instructor said that flannel was definitely not a good idea (and someone actually happened to be wearing it at the time).Keeping it down in the hood...literally!

Reply:These are my favorite Carhartt bibs.  It only takes me about 5 seconds on or off.  Warm, durable, comfortable and a reasonable price.I'm not a welder (just a wannabe), but a heavy equipment mechanic.  Same general idea.Best price, and free shipping.  CLICK HERE
Reply:First off...........don't wear your favorite thong that ya like to wear to the beachCarharts are ok, but you'll be sick when you burn holes in your 90 dollar overalls  Walls, or Dickie's are just as warm, and a lot cheaper.  Look for a store that sells "seconds" too........great deals.A word on SIZE .....................Don't be like the half azzed cowboy types I see around here.  Don't buy form fitting overalls.  It may look attractive to the horsey crowd, but it don't keep ya warm.  Buy one to two sizes too big for you.  You can then fit thermals, flannel shirts, hooded sweatshirt, and warm coat underneath.  Larger coveralls allow you to bend without binding.  It's all about comfort, not looks.BTW.......plain old spray on starch like your mother used use on shirts when ironing is a very good fire retardant.AND REMEMBER...........BUY BIG!!!!!!"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:(you other guys in Oklahoma know how miserable it gets out this time of year, it's all about layers to keep the wind cold and humidity out)"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:carhartt, as long as its carhartt youl be warm.. lol im wearin my carhartt coat right now

Reply:I wore this brand all the time at work. At my retirement party they made this for me. They said the couldn't recognize me in anything else. I caught my son arguing with one of his friends over whose Daddy was the biggest red neck. I heard my son say his was because I got all my clothes from the feed store. He said I would wear my Carhartts to church if my wife would let me.  Attached Images
Reply:filson wool, over carharts, over wool USMC or Army sweaters, over wool long sleeves and cotton t-shirt or Underarmour brand cold gear t-shirt.  Also, horsehide biker leathers from back in the day that we had real tannerys and mfg around that made good biker leathers..My favorite leather coat is a CHIPS coat from the 60s, but anything along the lines of departmental issue in the cold weather states is pretty bitchin' too.  Cowhide coats are too heavy, pigskin or goat is too thin...just my opinion..i buy carhart seconds, usually about $25 for a pair of uninsulated bibs.  I dont wear insulated bibs, they catch on fire too fast... just a pair of carhart pants and cabelas longhandles underneath..-20 here today, only thing cold are my feet...
Reply:i just saw the other day that carhartt has fire retardant jackets   maybe also have bibs in this line? not sure.
Reply:it was 80 today here
Reply:Anything 100% cotton or wool is relatively safe.Anything synthetic is not (likes to melt to your skin)Wool is your best bet in cold weather.Nothing like a warm sheep on a cold dayFelonCaution lurker lives here" hmmm That is serious, pass the ganja and pick up a  24 of MGD"

Reply:Most of the guys have covered it pretty well. I use Carharts or Dickies for pants, outer wear and coats. I prefer bibs/coat to coveralls unless its super cold as they are less restrictive to me personally. Every thing else is cotton or wool. You can pick up some good deals in surplus foreign military wool clothing frequently. I used to have 2 nice pairs of German wool winter pants.I love the duofold wool/poly long johns, but don't like to wear the shirts welding because of the sparks/ ploy issue. The British Navy learned this lesson the hard way in the Falklands war. They had gone over to poly shirts and pants because they were neat and clean. They found they had a huge number of burn casualties on the ships that were hit. Sailors literally had the shirts melt to them in the flash. Guys that wore cotton undershirts would only be seriously burned on the upper arms where the poly came in contact with skin. The cotton didn't even char, yet the poly melted and fused to the skin.  Any area with cotton under clothes was protected from the melting poly. I believe they changed shortly afterwords to eliminate poly uniforms. The US Navy took note of this and made uniform changes also. If nothing else a good layer of 100% wool or cotton can protect against the outer shell melting..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
