welding courses and certificates????

hey guys, just a quick one, i cant find much information on welding courses orcertification courses over there in the US, im open to either daytime or evening courses in MIG and TIG welding, and i dont mind course fee's. plus am i eleigable as im not a US citizen??? theres not realy any serious courses here in ireland without taking it up as a trade for 4 years. thanks Ronan

Reply:are you looking to actually come here for the training or are you looking for more of an online thing?there are thousands of colleges (as another alluded to) that teach welding. There are also the union programs but then you are tied in for a number of years.Heck, as nice as some of the guys here sound, maybe they will teach you in their garagesIf you come here, do you have an area in mind? Do you have any living arrangements available to you?are you even legally allowed to come here? I know little to nothing about international travel but I do hear of some folks that aren't allowed here for whatever reasons.
Reply:yeah im interested in coming over ther to learn tig welding, i have a basic/intermediate mig welding cert, but that was about 3yrs ago, and ive been useing the mig every day since, and would probably out preform most fully certified welders, its realy TIG i want to learn as not alot of places use Tig here, its quiet rare actualy. i have't any particular area in mind, or any living arangements, im just starting to reasearch this now. legaly im 100% alowed to come to the US, thats no problem, and as far as i know its ok for me to do a course as long as i either pay to do it, ie a collage. or if its a workshop or fabshop then i cant get paid for it as that would come under working in the us. does anyone have any specific site that i can search courses on, i tried the american welding societys site but didnt find much,

Reply:Check out www.welding.org.  This is the Hobart Welding school, and they have a good selection of welding courses you can take.  They are teaching 2 shifts of classes right now, but I don't know if any of the TIG courses are scheduled in the evenings.  The school runs 2 main programs; a 5 month structural welding program and a 9 month structural and pipe welding program.  You can also take the courses 1 at a time.  So far as I know their basic TIG course doesn't have any pre-requisites. Since you already have a background in welding I'm sure they'd let you enroll.  If I remember correctly, the basic TIG course is 2 weeks and covers steel and aluminum TIG welding.  There's also a TIG class for welding on 2 inch pipe(2 weeks), a class for stainless steel and titanium(1 week).  Lastly there's a combined TIG/Stick class for pipe(4 weeks).  I'm pretty sure you could take the Basic TIG and the stainless/titanium classes without having to go through any of the other courses in the pipe program.Unlike some community colleges, the Hobart school ( and some of the other private vocational schools) have rolling admission.  So you can get into a training course faster than you might at a public community college.Tuition at Hobart isn't cheap, but then for an international student none of the public colleges would be cheap either.Hobart's school can assist you with finding housing as they are accustomed to international students.Hope this helps and good luck.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:I was once in Ireland years ago at Harland & Wolf shipyard Belfast, Northern Ireland I remember seeing lots of welder's working on the various ships. You may want to contract those folks or just stop by and talk to them.
