I am building a trailer and would like to find out what paint to use. There is some sheet metal and i want to use a spray gun to paint it. I have sprayed one with Rustnolium but was not happy with the results. What will the difference be between a oil based or a latex paint. I appreciate your comments
Reply:Oil based will be much more suitable for bare metal. It is more durable to abrasion also . You could spend the money and go with an epoxy primer and enamel car paint. Although I've used the oil based rustoleum primer and paint just yesterday with great results. The sprayer however was a high volume low pressure sprayer. Just get that metal clean and oil free. Wipe down the metal with acetone prior to painting. Johnny
Reply:I agree w/ JW.   If this is a project you want to last, definitely shoot epoxy primer 1st.  It cost a bit more, but it's well worth it.    FYI, I sprayed a couple of steel house doors with a quart of Gloss Rustoleum using a HVLP Gravity gun.   I had to thin the paint a bit w/ lacquer thinner and seemed to get better results by turning down the amount of paint being applied and doing more coats.   I also doubled up on my strainers.  There were all sorts of "snards" in the Rustoleum paintThere are no small projects
Reply:Tank you for the input I Think I will stick with oil base paint. One more question How do i put letering on the side of the trailer. I have tried cutting out the letters from a cardboard to make a mask and then spray over it, but that dit not work so well. The spray find its way in underneith the edges. I do not want to spend a lot of mony on a name on the side of the trailer.

Reply:Thanks, I will give that a go.
Reply:Another way is to spray the area with the color you want for the lettering, apply vinyl letters over that, and then spray the overall color.  When you peel the vinyl letters off the other color is exposed.  Then clearcoat it.  Can be easier than cutting out the letters and is more durable than just using the vinyl letters, which can be scraped off fairly easily.  A vinyl sign shop can cut you lettering in any style.
Reply:Vinyl lettering is almost impossible to scrap off once it is put on properly. I have had many trucks and trailer lettered from a professional shop ( wife used to work for a shop), and the letters always stayed on. Make suer the shop is using a "high performance vinyl". It makes a difference from the the cheap stuff.
Reply:Here's another vote AGAINST latex primer..
Reply:Thanks guys I took note
Reply:the art supply by my house has letters that easily peel off just for that purpose. Maybe ck art supply places or sign supplies.BTS Welding
