topic says it all, I have a piece of 440C SS that i need to weld to 316 SS. I'll be tig welding, just need to know what filler rod to use. after the weld is done, i'll need to build up about 1/4" worth of material, do i use the same filler?on a similar vein, is 440C SS considered "food grade"? thanks in advance
Reply:440 has rather high carbon content, may I ask why you are joining it with 316? Im guessing knife making?Anyways my book says if welding is necessary, a preheat of 500F is recommended, welding with 309 will work and keep some ductility in the weld. Full anneal after welding. You will get the best corrosion resistance once hardened and tempered, polishing also helps. Would be comparable to 304 in most applications.Have we all gone mad?
Reply:it's a custom hammer for food preparation. ss 440c sphere, joined to ss316 shaft. I couldn't get the sphere in 316ss or even 304ss in the size i want from a local supplier (1.5 inch dia).what book did you find that info, i need to get a copy. |
