3000 per semester. first semester is cutting processes and 1g and 2g smaw amd gmaw. 2nd semester is 3g and 4g smaw and gmaw. 3rd semester is tig and pipe
Reply:No that's actually a deal compared to what I'm paying now and what every new class is paying after me.  My pay out is $20K and all classes after mine are $28K.
Reply:wow, what school? Welding is expensive and pipe is expensive but man that is quite a bit of money.

Reply:i go to a community college in iowa. we have top of the line machines and i have learned quite a bit in my first two semesters but just feel its a bit pricey for a small school in the middle of no where
Reply:That's seems outrageously expensive compared to what the local community college around here charges (at least for California residents).  I signed up for a couple welding classes at Sierra College and it worked out to just under $400/class including lab/material/book fees.  I went for a few days before deciding to learn on my own as the classes seemed to move too slowly.  They were nice enough to give me a refund.Electronics Engineer (embedded controls)Miller 200DX w/ Coolmate 3Thermal Dynamics 82 plasma cutterGrizzly G0678 8x30 millPM1440BV 14x40 latheHF 6x12 surface grinder
Reply:Zac you can't really compare the two quite that way. The local tech school near me charges $550 for the 10 week night class, total about 30 hrs. The summer FT program runs abou $7K, but thats 40 hrs a week for like 10 weeks. If you crunch the numbers the FT program is like $17.50 per hr. the night class $18.30 per hour. Actually the difference is even bigger when you figure that of those 30 hr's of night class 4-5 hr's is cleanup and probably 2 1/2 is BS and set up in the first 15 min of the class. That's close to 1/4 of the time lost, compared to maybe 1/10 in the day class for cleanup, lunch, breaks etc.I don't think that price he's got is all that bad..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I remember guesstimating that the program at HIWT was about $75 per day(2-3 years ago).  This works out to about $11-12/hour of instruction.  That was for the cost of their 9 month, full time program(~$15K total tuition cost).  Might(probably) be more expensive if you bought the classes a-la-carte.  The program at HIWT ran 8am - 4pm, with an hour for lunch and 2 15 minute breaks.  That's 6.5 hours of instruction, with about 30 minutes of classroom time each day and 15 minutes of cleanup time at the end of the day.A smaller school, with fewer students and less purchasing power for raw materials might be a lot more expensive.  Pipe and Plate for practice and testing is very expensive.  I bought some pipe coupons from the school for use on my own, and they were $15-$20 each for 6" sch 80 pieces with 2 machined bevels on each 2" long coupon.  Figure the school wasn't gouging me too bad on the material cost, and estimate that each student consumes between 6-10 ring coupons per week on practice and testing.  That's $100 -$150 per student per week just for base metal...assuming your students are working hard...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:Mine was/is5700 for structural certifications all positions.& Certification in Pipe welding all positions. Then it's another 5700 for a tig class, and all Certs for GTAW.Yes, It's freaking expensive, and hopefully it'll pay off.Edit:your prices sound reasonable enough.....Last edited by jsm11; 01-08-2010 at 06:41 PM.
Reply:I went to a CC and went thru their program.  Can't remember exact price but around $25 a unit for 18 units with class being 5 hours a day for 2 semester.  The steel was from scrap donations to the school. Went through oxy/fuel, mig, some tig and concentrated mostly on stick.  There was additional cost from books but all consumables were supplied.  I did obtain my L.A. City welders license for stick all positions. In total I think I spent around $1300 for everything except the TA185 that I bought to practice at home.
Reply:Honestly... halfway through TWS, I would kill for some extended time and some good old one-on-one instruction. If I could get multiple instructors to switch out watching me and advising me while I work, that'd be priceless.too bad that's more suited for lucid dreaming.Keeping it down in the hood...literally!
Reply:I'm going to http://www.auto.edu in Virginia Beach.  The program covers maritime and structural welding, smaw mig and tig up to 6G training and certification, covers use of flux core and now aluminum for tig and mig.  Materials are provided including flat steel plate, aluminum plate and square tube and steel pipe all in various sizes.  Rods and wire are provided as well as gas, training is also provided on the use of a lathe, plasma cutter, band saw, press, and a metal sheer.  Certification is also provided in smaw mig and tig.  The school is funded like a community college ( IE heavy federal funding ) and with the cost of having to bring in metal, fillers, rods, gases ect ect ect it all adds up, heck it was $1,800 to fill the argon tank for the bulk and its a decent sized tank about 8 foot tall and 6ft diameter.
