hi, my cousin went to work on monday morning, like he did the last 16 yrs i beleve.the doors to the plant was locked.they build truck beds ,a lot of turnpike beds. i live up the rd from the plant. theres always trucks to be mounted with beds in the parking lot ,and trucks completed to ship out. one of the companys lenders seized assets and wants to liquidate. good guys out of work. wheres there bailout money?  guess if your not from wallstreet or big banks,u just bend over and take what the goverment givs ya.
Reply:Thats terrible.
Reply:The Monday after Thanksgiving in 2007 we came to work and found out the plant was shutting down as of the first of the next year.  Some guys had been there 20 years or more.   Such is life, we all move on.  I went out on my own and turned my mobile/shop side welding jobs into a full time gig.   Of course the economic crash of 2008 didn't make it easy on my new business and things don't seem to be improving any this year compared to last year or the year before, but at least I am surviving, which is a big accomplishment in itself, in these economic times.  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Been through the same thing three times and it doesn't get any easier.  I was fortunate a couple of times, had six months notice once and four months notice on another.  One time was just as your cousin's situation.  That was the worst of all, no time to prepare and each time was in bad economic periods. Tell him not to set back and mope, that will not do any good whatsoever!  He needs to get his sh!t together and make some decisions, none of which will be easy.  He'll need to find out what kind of training and/or help is available in his location and utilize it.  Decide if a career change is in order, maybe start a new business, education, relocate, etc.  A lot to think about and it can be depressing.  Be there for him.  Don't be an enabler, be an advocate.  Cheer him up.  Make sure he understands it's not his fault, he's just caught in the middle.I know this  sounds like it's easier to say than do and it is.  But, I have been through the same thing three times and it required moving from Illinois, to Arizona and back to Illinois. It IS possible to bounce back.  It won't happen overnight but probably won't take all that long either.  Each time things got better than previously.                                                   But it will only happen if he takes action.  Time to take Life by the horns and fight!Remember the old saying; if life hands you lemons, make lemonade!Good luck, Bob."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.

Reply:Early June morning,1975, 6am, welding trucks lined up in the street waitin’ for the lead hand to show up and open the gate. I worked single hand, 454 Chev one ton, SA200 Lincoln, both company owned. Grinders, torches, pipe jacks and hand tools all mine. Some of the other guys worked single hand like me, some had their own trucks and machines. Mostly oilfield work, chasin’ drilling rigs, etc.Lead hand shows up, unlocks the gate and we all drive into the yard.  As I was getting’ out of the truck, FEDS jumped out of hiding with guns drawn and we ALL were ordered to the ground with hands raised! Two hours of questioning (no explanation) and I was released, free to go. No truck, NO TOOLS!Never got my tools back, never got an explanation. The guy I worked for has never been seen again. (at least not around here?) The guys with bank accounts had all monies seized. I was 25 with three kids, I had no money or assets the Feds could seize. We’d had taxes taken out of our paychecks, but no one had bothered paying the taxes to the Powers that be! Found this out from the local news rag.Two days later the yard was empty, the doors removed from the shop, the mobile office building gone, the chain link fence removed from the poles and rolled up and transported. No job, rent due, tools gone, 5 mouths to feed!!Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches
Reply:In '96 I came to work at start of my night shift just like I did every day at the casting foundry I worked at in AZ.   Once I pulled into the parking lot, there were Sherriffs everywhere.  All the gates to get into the various buildings were locked.  We were all herded into the cafeteria where we were presented with unemployment info and laid off effective that day, 250 of us.  The cops were there to keep the peace.  Most guys didn't suspect a thing.  I had heard of possible upcomming layoff from my sup but had no idea it would come that soon or be that big.  I had figured my departments jobs were safe since we had so few guys and each position was needed to get all the tasks done.  We still had orders to fill and jobs in mid process to complete.  They left a skeleton crew in each dept to complete what was left.  It worked out though, about 3 months later I was hired back on in another department.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:We're loosing a paper mill and meat packing plant here in the tidewaters area of Virginia, all in total there will be around 5k - 8k lost jobs from direct to indirect services and industries.  It bothers me greatly that a ton of this bailout money has gone to bonuses and or pay raises and parties ect ect ect.  Someone mentioned today that congress just voted themselves a %19.6 pay raise.
Reply:in 1977 i was working as a shipyard welder for general dynamics corp, ma.   we were building liquid natural gas carriers for lykes lines.  one friday they laid 4000 men off.  the state was in a severe recession,  if a job did happen to open up for a welder there would be a couple of hundred applicants for it.   it was pretty depressing, i packed up and went to southern california with about 600 dollars.   i was lucky though, no wife or children at the time.  was working within a week of arriving, for much better money and stayed busy all through the 80 - 81 recession.   you have to be ready to move if necessary and of course if possible.
Reply:In the early eighties I got laid off during the oil crunch pretty much without notice, the company went broke and shut down. I was newly married, had a new truck that I had to let go back, house payments ect. ect. First and last time to be on unemployment (it sucks). I wound up moving 250 miles away to find employment. I couldnt find a job at first as everyone kept telling me I was over qualified for the position, and I had never heard of that before. Long story short, I got back in the oilfield started at the bottom again and moved for the company 4 more times. Lost my butt on every move but built a good reputation and am constantly being offered job from different companys. That all started 27 years ago. Dont give up, its just another door opening. God Bless and good luck.
