* Need advice on Miller TIG welder *

I'm looking for a Miller TIG welder multi-purpose.  I would like to be able to weld on Aluminum heads for my race car, but also on Chrome Moly tube frames.  I don't want to spend $4K on a welder as this is a hobby.  I see some of the old welders like the Miller 330/AB P and Synchrowaves out there.  What would be the best welder to fit this purpose.I am looking around $1500 for something.  I have 80 AMP service for 230 VAC in my garage.  The Dynasty 200 dx looks nice but it's fairly expensive and I don't think it would work well on Aluminum Heads since it's rated at 1/4" thick aluminum if I remember correctly.  Any help is sure appeciated.
Reply:There are a lot of old Synchrowaves out there.  A current model Synchrowave 250 draws 96 amps at 230V for 310 amp output, so you could probably get 250 amps out of it without tripping your 80 amp breaker.   You should be able to get one for $1500 to $2000.   Look at ebay to get a sense of pricing.  Not sure where you are located, but craigslist is usually the place to start, being patient helps.For aluminum, you will want AC output and High Frequency.Remember that you will need a water cooled torch once you get over 200 amps or so.I am not sure what it would take to weld heads, I will leave that to others.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:I have both a 330ABP and a syncro 250, I like the 330 for the power, but the syncro really is nice on thin material, foot control on both, but the square wave gives much better control on thin material, at least mine does.
Reply:How about the Synchrowave 350... Is that comparable to the 330 AB/P?I see a few of these machines out there.  Area they 100 amp 230VAC as well?I really don't care about the mobility of the welder and space is not really a concern either.
