I purchased a 1978 c60 chev. winch truck missing the gin poles. The winch is 12 ton rated.I want to have some poles built and was needing to know what is best pipe material to use for these. They will mount at rear corner of bed and come together at top or A shape.Each pole will be 11' long. Max diameter of pipe will be 3.5'' so when not in use they would lay down in tray along sides of bed.I live in Oklahoma and have access to different oil field tubings and drill pipe but not sure of material that is used for poles.
Reply:The ideal pipe for that would be some 3.5" 13.30# drill pipe. It would have about a .375" wall, and would handle anything you could pick up with truck that size. There is a 3.5" 15.50# drill pipe that would give you a near .500" wall, but it is less common than the lighter pipe. There are several 3.5" tubings that would work, but they are generally only 0.250" or thinner wall. Another option is to sleeve the tubing with another piece that will fit inside the 3.5". I have a one-ton with a 15,000 # Tulsa on it, and it has 2.875" tubing with 2.375" inside 10' long. They have worked well. Our GMC Topkick has a 34,000# Tulsa, and we use 4.5" 16.6# drill pipe poles that are 16' long. Our big trucks mostly have Tulsa 80,000 or 100,000 lb winches, and we use 5.5" drill pipe on them, and they are about 20'-22' long. I just put these out there for examples of what works for us..............................."Look Good Doing It"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:Thank you for info.I like the idea of 13.30 drill pipe. I have 3'' line pipe and 2 7/8'' upset tubing that would sleeve together also but would like drill pipe instead. Time to start asking around and get started .
Reply:Just a word of advice. Leave some kind of drain holes at the bottom end (where the ears to hook onto the bed go), so they won't fill up with rain water. I have a winch bed off of a 2 ton, they put a stiff leg on to hold them in a fixed position, so they were not laid down in probably many years. Both poles have several welds running the length of the pipe, where they had water freeze in them, splitting the pipe. So you either need to leave some kind of drain at the bottom, or seal both ends.
