My wife said she heard from somewhere that you can take washers, overlap them onto each other, and then use high pressure to join them (like a hydraulic jack).  My thought is that you would either need to weld them or use some kind of a joining compound to get them to really fuse. Before going through the efforts of trying this, has anyone else ever done this? or something similar?  Is it possible with enough force to securely join them (strong enough to be part of a necklace)?  If just pressure alone is sufficient, how much pressure does it require?
Reply:What material?? Steels, plastics can be pressed together to get to the point of fusion, but you are talking a combination of heat and pressure. I don't think you can get that kind of setup in a home shop.I'll save the jokes until the rest of the guys start in with them!!And then, after so much work...... you have it in your hand, and you look over to your side...... and the runner has run off. Leaving you holding the prize, wondering when the runner will return.
Reply:She is probably talking about friction-welding. It's not as simple as indicated. Here is a link to an explanation of the process.http://www.welding-advisers.com/Friction-welding.html"SOUTHPAW" A wise person learns from another persons mistakes;A smart person learns from their own mistakes; But, a stupid person.............never learns.

Reply:There's a phenomenon called cold welding http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cold_weldingAlso while not cold formed.forging can be as simple as getting to parts red hot and smashing them together to form one (that's how a blacksmith does it)away from that  you haveultrasonic weldingexplosion claddingand friction upset weldingall of them don't melt the base metal but use some form of high velocity friction or energy to forge the pieces together.none of them are that common or easy to reproduce in ones garage.  Although students at Ferris State university did make a friction upset welder using an old lathe.on a similar vain resistance welding can be done and leave no trace of welding at the surface.  It's cheating since your using heat.  Cold welding doesn't need high pressure, but it does need hard vacuum.Last edited by Metarinka; 01-20-2010 at 07:57 PM.
Reply:She might have been referring to jo block glue.  Take two polished pieces, put together and squeeze the air out, difficult to separate.
Reply:Not wanting to look like the village idiot here but why would this type of process ever need to be done? I've made washers by taking round stock, drilling the hole, and cutting to size, and I've tacked a few "stock" washers together around the outsides to get what I need but the idea of fusing two washers together with some kind of press is a new idea to me.Just curious, thanks guys.

Reply:Google diffusion welding.   Before we reached space there was concern that metal parts in a vacuum would bond to each other.

Reply:Take copper tubing and mark it into 3/16" segments.Bandsaw almost though from one side (not all the way) then saw almost through from opposite sideContinue until you have something looking similar to a fat slinkyPull it out lengthwise (stretch it) then pound it flat. The washer-like holes will be oval-so push through the holes with a round punch if necessary then pound it again.Lie to the wife by telling her you welded them together.
