The shop I work at uses push-pull mig machines and an argon mix from a large exterior tank which supplies all five machines. We have on occasion, noticed an odor that is something like WD-40. I have contacted our vendor, who says they have heard this complaint before from argon as well as c02, but had no explanation as to the cause. We have only noticed this a couple of times a year. Our material is washed dried and wire brushed before any welding process is begun, we only purchase American product most of which is custom extruded for us. We use Alcotec wire. Have any of you noticed a similar odor? Do you have any ideas on what may cause it? Do you think it may be harmful to process or personnel?
Reply:The WD-40 smell yes!It never lingered enought to track it down, we get a similar but diffrent smell welding on material that has been cut with water based coolant it does not smell like typical oil.Mountain MetalDynasty 200DXCoolmate 1Miller Trailblazer 302 W/ KohlerMiller Suitcase 12VS Wire feederWeldcraft 26 TIG TorchMiller 210 Spoolmate 3035Thermal Dynamics 51 PlasmaVictor O/AJet 7x12 L Cooled Band SawDelta Drill Press |
