Hello,I want to build some small soccer goalposts(4ft wide) out of 1" steel rods/rebar, doesnt have to be 100% penetration, maybe even if 1/8 around the joints will be fine. Will my Milleratic 180 be able to do this or will the beads run cold from the start ?
Reply:Multi-pass,bevel the joints for depth and multipass. A small machine can do alot if your willing to bevel and use more than one pass.I welded a 1" peg with my hh187 back onto the bottom of a small dump truck tailgate using this method. I also used fluxcore for added penetration. That hinge peg has taken Alot of abuse since then and is still better than it was new.For a soccer goal, I think you'll be fine just cranking it up and welding the darn thing.Last edited by kenklingerman; 01-24-2010 at 10:59 AM.
Reply:You can do it with your mig with proper prep and multiple passes, as explained by Ken. Personally, I would use 1-1/2" shedule 40 pipe instead. The larger diameter pipe will be stiffer than the re-bar and easier to weld.MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op
Reply:Thats a lot of work for a goal, we build them from PVC pipe (2" heavy wall), if you need to keep them from flying away we glue them up and fill them with sand.If you cannot convince them, confuse them. Harry S Truman
